McBee Hate, Lofton Love

Lofton was twice as athletic as McBee - and was a way better defender and shooter. He still wasn't NBA caliber obviously - that's the only reason people talked about his lack of athleticism since his offense was NBA caliber, yet his defense wasn't. He managed to get quite a lot of steals through out his career if you remember (may not as many as Jajuan but it was up there several seasons).

Chris Lofton could play OK defense in the SEC and shoot with anyone. Skylar McBee (at this point) is a decent shooter who couldn't play defense against many above average high school teams.

I would say Lofton was twice the basketball player than Mcbee is at this point, but not twice the athlete. Skylar was also a very good highscool football player, he played qb and db.

Now I am basing this strictly on measurables, but Skylar was faster, quicker, and could jump higher than Lofton out of highschool. I'm still saying Lofton was a better basketball player.

Here is another way to look at it, if you were playing a pick up game of basketball, football, soccer, and baseball, who would you choose. I would choose Lofton in basketball only. The reason being is that Mcbee is the better athlete overall and would be play better in the other 3 sports. I know that is a strange analogy, but I believe one of the best ways to determine a great athlete is how they play other sports, not just the one they excel in ala Bo Jackson. JMO.

I would still choose Lofton. He was recruited as a WR out of high school as well. Most Div I. athletes are capable of playing any sport - doesn't mean they choose to. Lofton actually received a scholarship to a halfway decent school out of high school as well - tells me all I need to know.

i agree 100% with u on this, as do most people who watch alot of basketball, not just tennessee basketball.

People who watch a lot of basketball know the difference in hype and potential as well - so insinuating that you know a lot about basketball is not a good idea in this situation. And they realize why players like Andrew Bynum are selected out of high school is solely because of potential - not this hype crap you're referring to - NBA scouts are retards as you make it seem.

So you would take someone who is slower and less agile as a teammate?

for every andrew bynum, there is a shaun livingston, sebastion telfair, and a kwame brown.......hype caused these guys to get to the league, some guys live up to the hype(andrew bynum), some dont(shaun livingston, sebastion telfair, kwame brown)

It's still called potential, lol.

I have never seen McBee's measurables considering he wasn't even rated hardly by any scouting services since he was such a mediocre player and no big school looked at him. And show me a guy that runs a legit 4.4 and I'll show you a guy who runs a 4.6 but still is faster when he's on the court than the guy with the 4.4.

But I have watched them both on the floor - and McBee gets embarrassed by guards while Lofton could hold his own on defense except against the more elite guards with NBA potential (like against Louisville).

It is amazing how negative some people can be. McBee is the kind of player I love to have on my team because I know he is going to give all-out effort all the time. He is a Dane Bradshaw type, and I would love to have a team full of players with his attitude.

How many others have we had to walk on and play this much? I say, keep it up McBee and ignore these naysayers who cannot appreciate real effort. Most of us are very glad to have you as a Volunteer!

Jajuan Smith was a walk-on.

i keep seeing a lot of posters talk about mcbee not being very athletic and that he cant defend nebody....obviously u guys have forgotten that chris lofton had no d at all and was at best a liability on the defensive end of the floor; as well as a poor ball handler, hence why u dont see him in the nba right now. mcbee is what lofton was, a shooter, nothing more nothing less. lofton was a great player, dont get me wrong i love chris lofton, but he wasnt what some of u guys describe him as. he was a great shooter that hit some bigtime shots, but he wasnt very athletic or a good defender or ball handler so please stop with these descriptions of him. mcbee is cut out of the same mold as lofton; hopefully mcbee will develop into the caliber of shooter that lofton was for us.

Wow. McBee goes 12/33 from three and you are drawing comparisons to Lofton because neither one of them is particularly quick or can jump?

You really should have held this thread until McBee hits 400 more 3-pointers or scores 2,000 more points, allowing the comparison to make some bit of sense.

I like that McBee is on the team, especially since he is a walk-on. Anything he can add is great, and I very much appreciate hard work. I do not think he is anywhere close in shooting ability to Chris Lofton, nor is he as close in other aspects of the game. If this is negative, then so be it, but that is just how I see it. I think he gets a lot of hype being that he is a local kid.

let me go on record as saying chris lofton is my fav all time ut basketball player. he may not have been the most athletic vol, but his heart and effort were unrivaled. it seems to me that u guys are comparing the senior lofton with the freshman mcbee. tyler will never be a chris lofton but he will be a good sec player for bruce. he reminds me of a aaron green with his hustle. hopefully he will win a few of u guys over with his effort but probably not. lets face it,hes not from ky, new york or indiana, hes from a rural area in tn and hes white.
