You have been watching him play in a 4-3 scheme. He is a true NT in a 3-4 scheme. NFL teams are drooling over him.
He is a fish out of water in running the defensive tackle in this 4-3 scheme. It is difficult for a 6'8" 360 lb man to play a penetrating defensive tackle in a 4-3 scheme.NFL scouts may well be drooling over him, his incredible size and his potential, but I've heard and read from a number of sources that the coaching staff has been frustrated with him.
When Butch said early this year that our defense "will go as Dan McCullers goes", I'm pretty sure he meant Dan needed to be more dynamic than just being a space eater and occupying double teams. I thought he meant that Dan needed to be able to push the pocket up the middle and create QB pressures. Haven't seen that yet.
Not saying he's played poorly, just saying he hasn't been the dynamic presence most hoped he would be. Hope he turns it on starting this week... we need him.

He is perfect for playing the nose in a 304 scheme where all he has to do is own the center, take on double teams and the holes on each side of him.
He is going to be a great NT in the NFL.
You makes good points, assuming he plays with more intensity, more nasty than he consistently does now. I'll say that I saw Haynesworth, at 6'6" 330, play a penetrating, dominating 4-3 tackle many times.... when he really wanted to. I suspect Dan could do much the same, if he wanted to.
Dan and Haynesworth do not share the same skill set.
I know he's been a clown this season (no pun intended),
but I fear Clowney will try and show up against Tiny this weekend. Especially with the talk about how Tiny handled him last year.
On the other hand if that's true and Richardson prevails... I'm sure his stock will hold firm
