Media Bias

At some point in time Volnation is going to stop caring about "outside noise".....just one more thread about how "so and so hates us"...a bunch of Rodney Dangerfields.
When you inhabit the SEC and hear the constant Bama and Georgia fanboi media, it is only natural to crave a little bit of respect. 11 and 2 should buy one more than what we are getting. Especially considering we just beat 3 of the last 4 National Champions

Yes, it is what serious people view without their tinted glasses.

Ceiling means the absolute best we can conceivably do.

So just so we're clear, you're saying if this team plays to its absolute potential, at the very best it could win 9 games, 10 with a bowl? That's the peak of what this team can accomplish?

I remember being ranked #9 preseason in 2016 and going 9-4. Preseason rankings do not matter.

I also bet we were the only team to beat 3 in the top 10 and not be in it.

Georgia, Alabama, and OSU all lose multiple top players each season but never drop out of the top five 😬. Heck, Alabama lost their elite QB and don’t even really know who their starter is yet. Why aren’t they out of the top 10 if that is the rationale used to downgrade the Vols?
Because iT’s bAmA 😂 As someone who was around to witness when they weren’t so ‘unstoppable’ (as many of us on here were), it’s all cyclical and we can see the writing in the wall.. it’s unsustainable and it’s somebody else’s turn (though I really dislike it being Georgia).. We need to fix that 😂

Media bias definitely exists. It's incomprehensible to me that anyone could possibly believe otherwise. I don't think it is driven so much by anyone "hating" us, as it is by the favoring of other programs. You can make a strong argument that we should be ranked higher. I personally think we're close enough to where we should be that it's not much of a slight (if at all).

I'm just happy that the looong offseason will soon be over and we will get to see the Vols take to the field for real.

That is the likely upper boundary for this team's potential. Anything beyond that would be extremely extraordinary and require unlikely events to occur.

I'm from Clarksville My Guy, I get it... this whole "everybody hates us" has gotten old. We've got the best HC in the conference and the best offense in the nation and everyone's attention. If You take a look at the landscape of the conference and the game, it's not an unreasonable expectation to believe we'll be in the conversation for the foreseeable future, and there aren't many teams who can legitimately say that. We're here now. Let's act accordingly, and crying about disrespect isn't the move.

Clemson is a bit unsettling due to the fact that beat that team with this team..but...at the end of the day, pre season polls dont really mean anything anyway.

And compared to the respect LSU seems to be getting, who we drug all over the field.

I think some of the Clemson love is realizing they are in the ACC not the SEC. If our schedules were even and they were ranked higher I would have an issue.

It’s just we are one of the blue bloods of college football. It gets tiring being treated like beggars at the gate year after year. I understood it when we were down. Heupel and Company deserved better. But yeah, all we can do to change things is just keep winning

Yeah, I think UGA, Bama & UT all will fare how their QBs fare. If all 3 have great seasons it will be a tough fight, with UGA upper hand. If UGAs highly ranked QBs end up busting & QB merry go round could be a disappointing season for them considering they are locks to 3 peat by media. Same QB quandary for Bama and they have a harder schedule than UGA and also UT has some concerns, although Milton finished strong there are still doubters and he needs to show out.

Let’s continue to beat the drum……….
The only 11 win team (#1 offense) in the country from last year that’s not a preseason top 10 in the AP poll. Nah, no bias, move along.
Joe has big shoes to fill and a lot to prove. I think that's the concern with everybody

Media's MO is all about their bias. Some keep it fair and reasonable and most are worthless hacks IMHO. I miss Leonard's Losers and John Ward.

Ton is not the word I'd use as a team we look to reload. We lost Hooker who was great but we are replacing him with someone that won OB MVP and could be equal to HH or even I say better. We lost Hyatt who came out of nowhere to just show out , I think aided by Tillman having to sit most of season. We replace him with Squirrel who could eventually put up those numbers maybe not this year. Because we have Bru and Donte and Keyton. Our Tight ends are deeper than I've seen in a while. The running Backs are all back and a year older and wiser. I just don't see a ton , I see we put some guys in the NFL and to me we look like we have more destined for the league. Hang on its going to be a fun ride.

A lot of “coulds” in there.

All people view the world through a paradigm, a bias. All people "see" what they expect to see based on their biases (check out this video if you don't believe it ).

All people have a tendency to "tribe" with people who share their beliefs and cultural biases to the exclusion of other points of view.

The media is made up of people... therefore they are biased and tend toward those who affirm their own bias... leading to one-sided bias and "group think". We see that in political media, sports media, and even scientific journals.

You can have too much Preseason love. We should understand that the media will watch, wait, and see.
It would be worse to be over-ranked like FSU.

My table will not show up correctly.

Preseason Rank W-L Final Rank
2000 12 8-4 NR

2002 5 8-5 NR

2005 3 5-6 NR

2008 18 5-7 NR

2017 25 4-8 NR

2020 25 3-7 NR
