CNN’s Prime-Time Purge Continues As Top Star’s Show Is Axed

The purge at CNN continued Thursday, as the network announced leftist Don Lemon will be squeezed out of prime time and moved into a morning co-anchor role.

The eight-year run of “Don Lemon Tonight” will end as new president Chris Licht continues to follow through on his pledge to tone down the network’s far-Left slant. Lemon’s new gig will be co-hosting the revamped morning show with Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins.

CNN did not say how it would program the 10 p.m. ET hour after making the switch, nor did it say what is next for current morning show hosts John Berman and Brianna Keilar.

Lemon, whose show garnered a fraction of the audience of Fox News Channel’s “Ingraham Angle,” has long been one of the liberal network’s most far-Left voices.

CNN announced Thursday it would scrap its morning show, “New Day” and replace it with a new morning roundtable featuring Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow and Collins.

“A former Daily Caller employee will now co-host CNN’s morning show,” Molloy tweeted.

The ownership family faces accusations of meddling in coverage and endorsements, along with intense turmoil within the ranks.

This past May, a young reporter for the Los Angeles Times working a weekend shift filed a 190-word story about people suspected of stealing expensive watches before fleeing in a black Rolls-Royce.

The item by Jeong Park enraged activists. They were upset not by the crime, but by how the Times framed the incident in West Hollywood. Online, advocates pushing to slash police budgets derided it as a “press release” for law enforcement.

But it was one activist who joined the pile-on that turned heads across the newsroom.

Nika Soon-Shiong, the 29-year-old daughter of Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong, posted a critical tweet atop a screenshot of the article bearing Park’s name. In her post, which has since been deleted, the younger Soon-Shiong suggested the Times was helping to “protect the Rolls-Royce and luxury watches” while turning a blind eye to the sheriff’s department “overcharging, manipulating crime stats, or lying about the cost per deputy…”

CNN's Jake Tapper has been tapped to take over Chris Cuomo's old 9pm primetime slot - the latest in a series of sweeping changes enacted by the network as it looks to shed its perception of being too liberal.

Tapper, the outlet's lead Washington anchor, will man the hallowed timeslot through this year's midterm elections, the network announced in a statement Thursday, starting October 10 and continuing until November 11.

While temporary, the job - which was held by Cuomo until he was nixed for helping brother Andrew through his sexual misconduct scandal - could become permanent if Tapper, 53, draws viewers.

Viewership was down a staggering 29% from from the 2022 average for the 7pm time slot EST, according to the latest television ratings from Nielsen Media Research.

Sunday night's program was only watched by 401,000 viewers. And, in the advertiser-coveted demographic- ages 25 and 54 - only 44,000 of viewers tuned in, Nielsen reported. That figure is 64% off of the average for that hour, The New York Post reported.
