Media's perception of Tennessee

Their mindset will be the same as ours! Winning! Do I think they win no, but they will come into that game with the intentions of winning! An example last year do you not think Troy had a mindset of winning when they racked up 48 on TN? They came into that game with intentions of winning!

After watching game film of our D, I promise you they thought they could win the game.

Well then what makes you think that TN will not review film of FL or Oregon or other teams they play this year and not think the same thing?

Other than UT's D sucked donkey balls last year, nothing.

Don't think this team will see a top 25, maybe top 40. Two of the BCS components have us as a preseason top 40 team. Massey ranks us @ 38 & Sagarin @ 39.

The media (and coaches) have always been poor at factoring in strength of schedule into rankings.

You're right ... if we go 7-5 with losses to 5 top 10 teams, we really should be top 25. But we won't. They'll rank a 9-3 or 8-4 ACC team above us, even if said team only played 1 top 25 teams all year. They might cut us some slack (a game or two) vs a non-BCS conference team with an extremely weak schedule but that's it.

People rail against the computer rankings a lot. Computer rankings have their flaws, but they are much, much better at factoring in SoS than human pollsters.

Don't worry, if we go 7-5 we won't be ranked in the top 25 by any poll. It will take 8 or 9 wins to reach the top 25 at years end.

.........and then they lost.

Not really. Dude was talking about going undefeated and winning a NC, then he talked about winning the powerball. What did i miss?

He was comparing UT's chances of being your unbeaten 2013 BCS champions to his chances of winning the power ball. Not the 1998 team's chances but the 2013 team's chances.

He wasn't comparing winning the powerball to winning an NC, he was comparing situations where just wanting something isn't going to make it so because that's not how it works.

Let's say we beat everyone on our schedule that isn't in the top ten. That's certainly not a given, but it is possible. That would mean we would go 7-5.

How close would our games have to be against the top ten teams in order for the media to give us credibility? In order for us to be ranked in the top 25 at the end of the year?

Looking at the schedules of non-SEC teams in the top 25, I see at least half a dozen teams, where if we had their schedules, we would probably win at least nine games. Another six, where we would win eight games. If we had Louisville's or Boise State's schedules, we could probably go undefeated.

Take UT team 117, and give us the schedules of most of the non-SEC teams in the top 25, and we end the year in the top 25. If we go 7-5 with our schedule, I think we should at least be in the conversation as a top 25 team.

Of course, if we go 6-6, then this topic is null and void.

simple go 8 and 4 and win bowl game and we will be around 22, thats all we got to do check back at Christmas.:)

So let me just ask you little question. Do you think the players and coaching staff need a reality check? Cause you can bet your A$$ they will be thinking of Winning EVERY game! Not just 6 or 7! Now who needs the realitycheck?

The last folks that need a reality check is the team. If they walk onto a field thinking they can not realistically win, then they shouldn't even play the game. I have said this many times; Football is won by desire. Does talent help? You bet. Does strength and speed help? Of course it does. But with the exception of occasions when officiating sways the decision, I am yet to see a game that the team that wanted it the most did not win. That includes games that went as predicted, and upsets.

What has escaped me my entire life concerning college football; when did someone think who is best team in the land should be decided by a vote? Democracy may be fine for deciding who holds public office, but it really has no place in football.
