I just started late so a 20 YO seems wild, but I forget about this all the time...my wife miscarried and we would've had a 18 YO by now. Didn't end up having kids for another 11 years.

We got 2 healthy incomes and I'm not sure we could afford to do everything we need to get our kids competing at this level. The $ weeds out a lot of the best talent, even if other sports weren't more popular

The pay to play sports model doesn't work for sure. It takes a huge time and money commitment. The other issue is many of these traveling soccer clubs have B, C, D teams with just as much of a time commitment, a similar money commitment, but no upside of playing elite competition...

Yep, did tge baseball trail in early 2ks. HS club hockey was about 6k a year just to play. That doesn't count travel. The baseball wasn't even HS level.
