Memphis with a bad loss at home to SMU. Only a couple of players looked like they cared. Then Penny cussed at the local media guy for questioning his coaching. Fan support has completely turned against Penny. Incredible fall from #1 class in country and national title talk to who can we hire to get us out of this dumpster fire. A cautionary tale for schools making big name splashy hires with no real coaching experience

did you see that press conference ? Penny is not a name for a full grown man , but the way he acted...like a penny . I would agree with your assertion. Too much ego, not enough humility . He embarrassed himself, he had all the excuses . SEE YA Penny . JMTC (just my two cents)

The guy is already on staff. That is if the ball players can be taught. (remember they are Penny type people)

Their head coach has found guys that mirror reflect his whole life as a basketball player. If Memphis High expects to get to the top over the next few years, Penny must step down or be shoved aside. Sorry to say this but his actions speak loudly of his lack of class and slanted respect for sportsmen ship of the game.

Are you referring to Coach Brown? IMO he would be an interim but I doubt he is who you would want leading your program into the future. Rasheed Wallace would be worthy of consideration.

Larry Brown is like 100 and he's dirtier than Penny. Rasheed Wallace just got fired (i.e. he is now an assistant working remotely)

I didn't get the impression he was fired. What I read said he decided to take an off-floor role due to health concerns, which I took to mean Covid-related concerns. Perhaps he is at-risk with underlying conditions. Maybe I misinterpreted, though.

The school is saying "health" but all the buzz locally (especially if you see some of the player's reactions on social media) was there's a rift between him and Penny. Penny has also minimized the role of Larry Brown and Larry/Rasheed have a past that goes back to the Pistons. You will see once the rats officially leave the sinking ship after the season.

This is the same school that misled about Derrick Rose, James Wiseman, and lied about the vaccination status of players. This is the same school that said we were the ones to chicken out of the game earlier this season. Yeah, they don't get the benefit of the doubt.

Rasheed Wallace was pretty well respected as an up and coming coach if I remember correctly before he went to Memphis. If Penny fired him or demoted to remote work that doesn’t really reflect poorly on Wallace IMO. Not being able to get along with Penny’s way of doing things could be considered a plus.

When you pay millions of dollars for a "Penny", you still only have a penny . . . Memphis is still searching for the "glory" days of Gene Bartow and Dana Kirck, the latter being of questionable character.

Penny wasn't the answer to bring stability to the game, he was to appease the Tiger High loyalists . . .

Penny is the University of Memphis' problem now, he made hundreds of millions playing in the NBA and hawking Nike sneakers and needs the Memphis job like he needs a hole in the head, as we all know Penny can recruit and pay moving bills, but Penny can't coach and can't teach the game. But the PR nightmare that has engulfed TigerBall this year will keep Memphis out of any trailing Power 5 conference that is looking to expand/replace departures for another decade. When the Memphis fans ball their fists and their wallets, then the University of Memphis will have to move on (again) and Orlando ("Tubby") Smith is laughing at them along with the rest of the basketball nation.

never had much respect for him. lost it in its entirety when he said, "coach barnes? eff a coach barnes!" on a hot cam/mic. i know barnes has his imperfections - a lot on here think he is passed his prime, bug geez what an emotionally immature penny that guy is.

YEAH! If you wanna take cheap shots at our coach, Penny, man-up and hide behind an avatar like we do!

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy, other than Will Wade…

I think most fans on the outside looking in can clearly see this horrendous quagmire that will eventually end with disastrous results. OBVIOUSLY…Hardaway was a bad hire from the very start but UM had no other options but hire him. Just imagine the reaction from every self serving entity had they passed on PH. You simply DO NOT hire an AAU coach to CEO your college level program especially one that’s deeply in trouble all ready. As the old adage states so appropriately…”PRESSURE DOES NOT BUILD CHARACTER…IT REVEALS IT”! And his character has been on public display for some time now. I personally could NEVER get on board when the leader is so bankrupt of respectable character!
