Melt down in Memphis

My 2 cents.

Living on outskirts of Memphis (Germantown) , the few Tigers fans I know feel Penny has a very long leash.
They are not going to do anything soon on this matter. Some are comparing his first 3 years to Cal's first 3 years,
and say there isn't much difference and they still support him, although they disapprove the way he had handled himself.

Penny's going nowhere short term. He is fine for next 2 yrs.

This is just what I'm hearing. I personally detest him primarily because I think he is a thug.

Are you referring to Coach Brown? IMO he would be an interim but I doubt he is who you would want leading your program into the future. Rasheed Wallace would be worthy of consideration.

Yes Brown. However I never meant to imply he was the long term answer. He, to me, is a guy who might be able to stabilize and instill some "team play" discipline in the ragtag attitude and play of this group of kids. That is if he could take over know. That way who ever Memphis High can bring in for next season will at least have players who may be able to listen and can be coached to do his bidding.

You are probably correct because I don’t think their administration has the courage to go through another Larry Finch situation. You can tell they have no stomach for even disciplining him since there has been no statement at all since One Cent’s tirade. And I don’t think he’s a thug. Just think he is an ex NBA star with a giant ego who doesn’t know how to deal with failure. He thought he could do this job by recruiting good players and then just roll the ball out on the floor. Obviously doesn’t work that way.

Sometimes you don't realize the character or values someone else inculcated in you when you were young, until you deal with seemingly similar others who didn't receive that.

Exactly. It just blows my mind that he has an ounce of credibility left with ESPN.

Agreed but it is ESPN which is woke central and acts a primary provocateur to gaslight everyone about perceived systemic racism without realizing they have become the proverbial "boy who cries wolf" serving only to water down the topic and delegitimize the term entirely.

Anybody catch Stephen A. Smith's take on this Penny blowup? My goodness...

First, he calls Penny a really good coach who's only going to get better, which automatically should invalidate his take on the issue. Penny might get better, but he isn't even an average coach, right now, let alone a very good one.

Second, he calls him a really good person. And maybe Penny is a good person in certain circles, but the Penny presented in front of the national media comes off as whiny and entitled. Whether he's a good person is really irrelevant respective to his ability to coach and lead young men, but he doesn't present himself as a good person by reacting the way he did.

Third, Stephen A. tries to make it a race issue (shocking, I know) by saying that Penny has to keep his cool because he can't react like that as a black man in this profession. As if to say the boogeyman white media is looking to crucify him already, not for being a bad coach, but for being a bad black coach. And sure, I'm certain there are racists and bigots among the media just like there are amongst plumbers, architects, and gas station attendants. It wouldn't matter to me if Penny were black, white, Asian, or Martian. You don't react that way when your ability is challenged. This isn't the playground. You take the high road as the leader of your team. That's what you signed up for and answering tough questions is part of your job that you are handsomely paid to do. The question wasn't out of line, but the response certainly was. There's nothing racial about it.

Stephen A. Smith is the ultimate gaslighter, so not surprising that he'd have these outlandish takes, but good grief...how is he still employed? That guy is nothing but hot air.
People keep paying attention and getting riled up. That’s what gets clicks and $. If everyone would just ignore it, it would stop, or at least we’d all be ignoring it so it wouldn’t matter if it stopped or not.

When you pay millions of dollars for a "Penny", you still only have a penny . . . Memphis is still searching for the "glory" days of Gene Bartow and Dana Kirk, the latter being of questionable character.

Penny wasn't the answer to bring stability to the game, he was to appease the Tiger High loyalists . . .

GBO
I would include Calipari also. His leaving the program was devastating as Pastner was never the answer. Tubby was not a fit. As for Coach Penny he can recruit, but just hasn't grasped the HC reins or what's required of it. That melt down presser ain't going away. Personally he should do like the Spurs head coach in handling the media - short answers, stay on topic, end it peacefully and move on.

Local radio said Wallace didn’t want to get vaccinated, and part of him physically leaving was due to that.

The vaccination status is just an excuse to cover up the rifts between Penny, Sheed, and Larry Brown.

Parrish and his liberal stance would normally have a field day with the Vax issue but he's been quiet by his standards. He's the biggest media voice locally and he knows the real truth. It's why he didn't carry the water for Memphis immediately after they cancelled their game with us in December. His (relative) silence is telling.

Pop? Penny behaving like Popovich?
Would honestly love to see him mature into a coach with that much depth. Would not take that bet though….Maybe at huge odds on a flyer.

He would have eviscerated a white coach who acted like that. SAS is a loudmouth, bigoted blowhard. He is one of the major reasons I don't watch ESPN except when games are on.

People, the man is sorry!

(Yes, that statement could be taken either of two ways...)

Only self absorbed fools would sign up to play for this clown and have him mentor you into manhood. Well, that and kids who got illegally paid.

I change the channel whenever I see Smith, and that started years ago. Early on, his outlandish and outrageous takes were almost always absurd, and they always will be. He’s still employed because of two reasons, which in and of themselves, are very different. My guess is that almost no one else would have survived his antics and agendas, and I doubt very few who live in our society respect this guy.
