Melt down in Memphis

If the Memphis job comes open, it will be a plum position with all the talent that is already accumulated plus the fertile recruiting area.

The last 3 coaches have been a guy with no HC experience, a washed up Tubby Smith that Texas Tech was glad to lose, and a cheating high school coach.

It's not the job their fanbase thinks it is.

Rasheed Wallace was pretty well respected as an up and coming coach if I remember correctly before he went to Memphis. If Penny fired him or demoted to remote work that doesn’t really reflect poorly on Wallace IMO. Not being able to get along with Penny’s way of doing things could be considered a plus.
They aren’t giving the head job to another unproven ex NBA player. That is a failed experiment they are going through now.

When you pay millions of dollars for a "Penny", you still only have a penny . . . Memphis is still searching for the "glory" days of Gene Bartow and Dana Kirck, the latter being of questionable character.

Penny wasn't the answer to bring stability to the game, he was to appease the Tiger High loyalists . . .

GBO
And to get butts back in the seats. They were hemorrhaging financially and they also have to meet a minimum average attendance or they don’t get a rebate from the Grizzlies.

Calipari put their program on the map and they have never been close to that level since he left.
Similar to our situation in football isn’t it? Made a series of bad hires and it set them back years. That’s what happens when you make poor coaching hires. Hopefully we’ve solved our football mess. Time will tell.

Not a shock. He never had any business being the coach there. He actively lobbied for the firing of a National Championship basketball coach from Memphis when he should have been lending his support as a leader in the Memphis and Memphis State communities. Sewing the seeds of division almost as soon as he became the coach at East. BTW, I have never and will never call him Penny. His name is Anfernee and he was a hell of a basketball player at every level. Overcoming a lot early on to even get on the court for Memphis State. In one news conference he completely destroyed what was left of his legacy. Larry Finch and Tic Price would have coached circles around Anfernee.

Fake news! Roster is depleted with injuries, Tiger's will be fine. Volunteers basketball is collapsing big-time and who I'd be worried about if I were a basketball fan.

That’s what’s what Penny will tell you. How many 5 stars did Memphis State start last game? I think it was 3. Boy that must be hard to coach up. Poor Penny.

Anybody catch Stephen A. Smith's take on this Penny blowup? My goodness...

First, he calls Penny a really good coach who's only going to get better, which automatically should invalidate his take on the issue. Penny might get better, but he isn't even an average coach, right now, let alone a very good one.

Second, he calls him a really good person. And maybe Penny is a good person in certain circles, but the Penny presented in front of the national media comes off as whiny and entitled. Whether he's a good person is really irrelevant respective to his ability to coach and lead young men, but he doesn't present himself as a good person by reacting the way he did.

Third, Stephen A. tries to make it a race issue (shocking, I know) by saying that Penny has to keep his cool because he can't react like that as a black man in this profession. As if to say the boogeyman white media is looking to crucify him already, not for being a bad coach, but for being a bad black coach. And sure, I'm certain there are racists and bigots among the media just like there are amongst plumbers, architects, and gas station attendants. It wouldn't matter to me if Penny were black, white, Asian, or Martian. You don't react that way when your ability is challenged. This isn't the playground. You take the high road as the leader of your team. That's what you signed up for and answering tough questions is part of your job that you are handsomely paid to do. The question wasn't out of line, but the response certainly was. There's nothing racial about it.

Stephen A. Smith is the ultimate gaslighter, so not surprising that he'd have these outlandish takes, but good grief...how is he still employed? That guy is nothing but hot air.

Memphis with a bad loss at home to SMU. Only a couple of players looked like they cared. Then Penny cussed at the local media guy for questioning his coaching. Fan support has completely turned against Penny. Incredible fall from #1 class in country and national title talk to who can we hire to get us out of this dumpster fire. A cautionary tale for schools making big name splashy hires with no real coaching experience

Can't wait for Peyton to come marching home. 🙄

“If I were a basketball fan” is a telling statement because you obviously aren’t if you think the Tigers will be OK. One cent’s four years has been a miserable failure. Unless they win the AAC tournament, they aren’t making the Dance for the fourth year in a row. But sure, they’re going to be fine. 😂😂😂😂

Great points and all true. But my question is, how did you set in front of the boob tube long enough to listen thru the diatribes if that ESPN racist? And why?

Steven A. is going to defend his buddies no matter what. Even if the evidence is overwhelming that One Cent can’t coach his way out of a paper sack. His opinion is irrelevant. People know what they see.

Couldn’t have happened to a better person. The writing is on the wall at Memphis High and I would be surprised if he is t fired before the season is even over with.

Well, ironically enough, it was titled as if SAS was admonishing Penny's behavior. I should...and subconsciously did...know better.

But even more odd was that the video appeared as the top news feed item on Tennessee Basketball's ESPN team page. That is how I even came across it. Not sure why as there was zero Universiry of Tennessee-relevant content in the video.
