Meltdown in progress

It's called seeing trends.
And being a realist. Stuff’s off. Confidence and fight aren’t there away from home. Speaks to a lack of proper preparation and ability to handle adversity. Doesn’t matter how naturally gifted or how many stars you have if the former aren’t present.

“It happens”

Yea that’s kind of the issue
It's not an issue. We were not going to go undefeated. It is delusional to think we were. Look, I am as upset about losing to MU as anyone. I HATE that liberal bastion of evil. But we got gashed by a better team tonight. I would really be interested to be in the meetings next week when they do the post mortem on the disaster. I am really disappointed that we didn't make any adjustments in the second half, and as one dimensional as they were (Shrader), we couldn't stop him. I'm at a loss to understand it

Oh I agree with you, but I feel strongly that in 2 years we are having this same conversation.
If Banks and Martinez are still around there is no doubt we are having this same conversation couple of times every year as long as they are here. As we have already seen during Heupel years the pattern is very clear where Banks and Martinez are going to get this program embarrased at least a couple of times ever year, and it's not even happening only against powerhouses like Bama or UGA but even against mediocre programs like SCjr, Mizzou, and even the worst Florida team in a long time. We were all rightfully very happy to finally beat Bama last year but remember how miraculous offense had to play to overcome the defense giving up 49 points. Defense was actually horrible most of last year as well and only the consistently high scoring offense helped where fans did not focus on it so much as long as we were winning (until SCjr game made that crystal clear).

Yes. Agree. The problem is that Tennessee will continue to lose when the season is on the line. That is what we do...no matter who the coach is.

I don't agree. I think a smart DC would do wonders with the exact same talent we have on D right now. And offense will not be an issue - Heupel is a great offensive coach and I have no doubt offense will be great soon (level of talent we lost since last year was dramatic so certain drop-off had to happen). However running game has been spectacular for most of this year and we know Heupel has been successfull with offenses everywhere he's been so that's not going to be an issue. We are literally just a good DC away from making that next step to really challenge for the SEC title. The real problem is that Heupel seems very loyal to his staff (to a fault) and unfortunatelly that will probably cost him his own job as well.

Would people be willing to have as much patience for Heupel if it took as long as Dabo to get it turned around if the results were similar?

Heupel lost me quite a bit tonight.

I wouldn’t have been nearly as upset if it was a close loss…

29 points though? Definitely something wrong.
🤦🏾‍♂️ If he lost you, he never had you. The game is always about match ups. Their run scheme worked against our personnel because we don't have the speed at LB. Nothing could be done about that. There are not adjustments that could be made to overcome the speed problem.

Watching that game was painful. Mizzou's players were dropping like flies but they kept performing like world beaters and never slowed their momentum. Our players did some good things but then played like weak sisters every other two or three downs. Who knows why, but they just could not keep it going. It really sucked, but that is college football. Coaches and players need to figure it out PDQ. Beating Georgia would be good.

Only reason it got turned around is because Cutcliffe came back. Maybe next year we get Golesh back?
Our success in the past isn’t necessarily the only answer. I do think we miss Golesh a little bit. He probably pushed back on Heupel a bit and it was more of a small committee vs Huepel basically calling the plays for Halzle. That said, I think Halze will get better. And Halzle didn’t cause the JW or Milton fumbles or the penalties. I’m not sure how many RBs would have held onto the ball JW lost, but still… those two plays and fewer penalties, and that’s a completely different game and we are all having different conversations.

I think we are a couple years away from what everyone wants to see. I’m just glad we had the surprise that last year was.

We’ve beaten:

Virginia
Austin Peay
University of San Antonio
South Carolina
Texas A&M
Kentucky
U Conn

Maybe, just maybe, we’re not as good as we thought, certainly not as good as this fan board often represented. Missouri embarrassed us tonight. Georgia will beat us next week, in spite of all my hopes and dreams. I bleed orange, but reality is what it is. Maybe 8-4 is reasonable. Maybe not, it’s what I predicted. But tonight was bad. Very bad. We didn’t just lose. We got manhandled in every aspect.

Solid points, and a great post. Just goes to show that hype and reality more often than not, do not align (at least in the case of our beloved program). Beating creampuffs and weaker conference opponents makes for a great afterparty for a good tailgate, but that's it.

Hopefully the team will decide to show up with a pulse next Saturday against Georgia and make it a game, but I'm not holding my breath on that point with the abject lack of fire they've shown.

It was just a bad day at the office for everyone. No one is getting fired.
You call that a bad day? Wow. We get Road romped by a Missouri team that should never beat us. We didn’t show up. CJH should be appalled at how his team played in all phases except punting the ball. It’s an embarrassment to all associated with his program. You cannot sugarcoat what happened last night. No positive spin to put on it. No way to say it other than we sucked last night.

Trying to remember the last time Alabama or Georgia got „blown out“.
This was a disgrace however you want to cut it

It was a terrible loss, but to compare us to Georgia or Alabama right now is absurd. We're a couple years removed from the garbage heap and you're using the two best programs in CFP as a measuring stick? C'mon now.

Nico is a 5 star so he will obviously be a leader!!

Sorry don’t have blue font from my phone. 😝

Gotta hope so...and the coaching staff can only do so much in that regard. The drive to lead ultimately comes from within.

I didn’t sugarcoat anything. It was a horrible game. They were probably thinking about their fat girlfriends.

I can't help but notice that the elite programs reach 11 wins and by some miracle, manage to get 11 wins consistently.

I'm sure this fan base isn't a lot different than others, but the amount of butthurt and fatalism on here is incredible. For the first time in a decade and a half we're playing meaningful games late in the season and recruiting well, and this only a couple years removed from being in the gutter.

It takes time to turn a roster over and build quality depth after losing a third of your roster, but so many were spoiled by last season that they've completely lost sight of that, and are expecting Georgia and Bama results when those schools have been recruiting at an elite level for a decade plus.

If we are having these same conversations in 2-3 seasons, then there might be a valid point, but until a coach has a chance to turn a roster over and establish his system and culture completely it is ridiculous to make comparisons with the few ultra-elite programs in CFP.
