Memorable "Goal Line" Stands

When LSU had not lost in forever, was #1, and Billy Cannon was winning the Heisman, a not very good Vol team stuffed Cannon short of the goal and ended the streak. Early '60s I think, but I'm too sick to research it.

I remember being at the game and telling some young people to sit down so I could see the play. :loco:

How about Tennessee v. LSU in 1964 I think it was the Vols stopped the Tigers drive on the goal line to preserve a 3-3 tie.

1987 at Kentucky. Tennessee led 24-20 but UK had first and goal at the 5 with about 2 minutes to go in the game. They try 4 straight running plays. On 4th and goal from inside the one, we hit the RB before he can jump and he never gets airborne at all. Ballgame! :dance2:

I was there for that one. Mark Higgs 4 times off tackle.
And we thought Randy Sanders had no imagination......

Are we talking literal on the goal-line stands in this thread or like stands inside the 4,5,6,7 yard-line area?

Before my time, but stopping Billy Cannon of LSU back in 1959 has to be the biggest in UT history...

Bill Duff and others stopping Eddie George in '96 Citrus Bowl is another memorable one :salute:

Was in college at Tenn Tech then and Tech was playing [I think Memphis State] and at the moment the Vols stopped Cannon, Memphis State scored. Much of the Tech crowd was listening to the Vol game on transistor radios (us old folks remember them) and let out a deafening yell. On Monday, in an assembly the Tech President gave all of us a total dressing down...But it was one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, play in Vol history....

1998 vs. Auburn. A literal goal line stand. Stopped them four straight for a turnover on downs.

Edit: This was also the game Shaun Ellis had that pick 6.

Billy Cannon

A good one I saw live was against USCe in Knoxville. I think it was 2000-2001 I can't remember. I think we had Haynsworth and Henderson, Lou Holtz was coaching SC. Neyland was absolutely cranking, it was sick.

I want Tom Mattingly's job when I grow up and learn how to write really well.

That link is indeed CLASSIC! In every sense of the word. Thank you sir!

My pleasure sir. I was 16 when it happened. Didn't see it live but did see it on TV. Stuck in my memory ever since.

I was actually right there for the goal line stand at the barn. Completely bad arse! One of my favorite moments as a fan as I have a lot of barner friends.

I was there too!! About row 7. FOUR tries INSIDE the 1 yard line & our D stuffed them all 4 times!!
Another good one was in 1987 at KY. They had the ball on the goal line with only a few seconds to go. We had the lead by 4 I think...We held them 4 downs & won the game!! (That was the 3rd win in a row vs Ky on our way to 26 straight)

Been mentioned several times, but Duff stuffs Bucks. Saw him at an alumni event and felt like I was seeing royalty. My dad played MLB at Tenn and enjoys reenacting this on me every bowl season.

After all this Gator Bowl talk I hit youtube to watch it. There's a 9 min vid of the highlights which are fun to watch. What was really fun was the intros of the players. You see a guy that in this day and time is maybe big enough to be a free safety and he's introduced as a lineman.

The 2007, overtime game at Kentucky. We win, we advance to the S.E.C. Championship game. A. Woodson is stopped on an attempted 2 point conversion.

This.

Was probably one of the best games (outside of that years LSU game) I've ever been too. 6 combined turnovers and great performances from lots of players.

One of the best chances UK had to break that streak.

I almost got into a fight with my UK fan inlaws during that game. I loved the win but the way they were was brutal(They think UT's athletic programs are evil cheaters)during and after the game.

uk fans think UT cheats??? LOL did they see that scumbag kentucky player that blatantly grabbed EB's facemask after his OT interception?

I'm sure UT players have done the same thing before lol.

Unfortunately, the way the OT format and rules are structured, it was pretty much one of those free penalties...the kind where if it saves a TD (like, as another example, if you're going to be beat on a deep pass play, commit a pass interference penalty, since it will just give them 15 yards instead of a long touchdown), and yeah the coach is going to publicly tell you not to do it...but he'll probably secretly be glad that you did.
