Memphis to Big East in 2013

The big 12 move for wvu was essentially a "who else bigger/ moderately recognizable brand can we get" with an additional "without disadvantgeously opening up Texas even more and hurting the main Texas-member teams"

They didn't really have alot of options to get to 10 honestly

Hell, getting back into Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Tennessee, any of those states are better than West Virginia.

Tell me, though, out of Utah st, Colorado st, new Mexico, new Mexico st, nevada, unlv, which of those schools is either remotely recognized or even just bcs conference sized?

New Mexico, Nevada, UNLV, BYU (who they went for) or Memphis would've all been better options than WVU, at least in my opinion.

Even though WVU is perceived as a great football program, go back and check some of the teams that have won Big East titles over WVU in the past few years. UConn, Cincy, Louisville. Not exactly a "who's who" of football powers.

I know we like to make fun of UM sports on here, but I think it'll be good for the off-and-on Tenn-UM football game to mean a little more - now it's SEC-Big East. This will only be a bad thing if we start losing the occasional football recruit.

I'm not calling them a great football power at all (they don't bring much overall to the table anyways; that's the flaw in the "wvu should be in the sec" idea)

all I'm saying is, other than being geographically closer, none of those schools really would bring anything to the table at all - program size, fanbase size, even just city's population...wvu was at least a semi-recognizable name for them to add when essentially plugging a hole, even if it's a huge stretch of a location. (you're right BYU was a earlier choice - as was Arkansas - and likely a better fit had it turned out)

They were already worried about their tv contracts due to membership issues; with all that, they didn't want to just look for the nearest small school and plug them in due to preserve geographic locale....

it'd be one thing if these were the main schools in those larger states, but most of them look to either be top among a small state or 2nd or 3rd down, of middle size in their states

The Big East will be pissed when we hang 50 on one of their schools every other year.:)

This may mean the end of the UM-UT football game for the time being.

Hm, dunno; im not sure how much being in the big east changes Memphis's scheduling strategy

Whether the big east will go to 8 or 9 conference games (nearly everyone is doing the latter) still remains to be seen, however I'm not sure it means Memphis just starts scheduling 3-4 cupcakes instead each season...also I think (could be wrong) the state govt requires that the two play each other in like a home and home every so many years

Heard it'll be 9. The effects on Memphis' attendance are yet to be seen, which was the only reason to play UT/Ole Miss/Arkansas/State in the first place.

We'll see, but I think the football home and home is in trouble, and basketball is most likely done.

How many members does the big east have, basketball wise?

Rumor that they may join BE in 2012 if WVU pays the big buyout to go to B12 early. Anyway this is possible seeing as schedules have already been made for teams next year?

Just checking, his is taking into account the 3 schools leaving and not all the additions (Boise, sdst,...I think one more I can't remember) being full members, right?
Yes and no. They are not full members but it looks like they will play home and home for 4 years.

Memphis to play San Diego State, Boise State in basketball as part of Big East move »

Pretty well laid out graph in the middle of this page:

Navy is the other school entering the Big East...err, "Big 20"...err, maybe just "Big".

When all shakes out, there will be 12 football schools:

Boise State:eek:lol:
Central Florida
Cincinnati
Connecticut
Houston
Louisville
Memphis
Navy
Rutgers
San Diego State:eek:lol:
SMU
South Florida

...and 8 more basketball-only schools (which SHOULD break-off with Xavier, Dayton, St. Joe's, and Holy Cross to create their own basketball conference)

DePaul
Georgetown
Marquette
Notre Lame
Providence
Seton Hall
St. John's
Villanova

So I'm counting this correctly at 17 conference members as far as basketball, right?

Looks like CUSA and the MWC might do a full fledged merger to a 16 team football conference.

How about the Sun Belt and WAC do the same? Speaking of the WAC, who the heck is left in that now?

The Big East is just one convoluted mess. I used to know all the teams in the big conferences. Now I couldn't even take a stab at who is in the Big East.

If UConn succeeds in getting out of the Big East, they should add a team towards the West to make the divisions easier to set up for travelling purposes. Even with Memphis in the "West," there's still only 5 of the 12 in the West.

12 in football, 17 in basketball. Not sure if Navy is a full member or not.

Makes sense to me. 9 conference football games, 16 or 18 (allowing for 2 replays against rivals) conference basketball games.
