Memphis vs Arkansas State

It would have to be his only offer.

If Memphis doesn't get rid of RC, they might as well keep Porter.

I don't think they will fire RC. It is was understanding from some people close to the program that he is heading into retirement soon. I think the plan was for him to announce this coming summer that next year will be his last.

President Shirley Raines and RC's contracts both were supposed to end in 2012. However Raines didn't want the new president to worry about hiring an AD as soon as he/she takes the job as president. Therefore she extended RC's contract to 2013.

That said, RC is in pretty good with the big boosters so I am not sure anything will happen to him. With him still as AD, Memphis will never make any progress.

RC has got to go. If not, then the football program just needs to be packed up because it's clear that it is not a priority. Usually I'd say that any new coach should be given 4 years to institute their schemes and get their players into the syatem, but a 44 point loss to Arkansas State means that something is missing. I'd venture a guess that the talent level at the two schools is even, so Larry Porter is a worse coach than Hugh Freeze by roughly 6 touchdowns.

RC Johnson has managed this football program so poorly so since DeAngelo Williams' left that it's almost beyond saving. Maybe it is beyond saving.

I actually want to see that Peay-Memphis game. Two really bad teams going at it. May the best team lose.

I've got a soft spot for Peay. My granddad taught there and my dad used to go to basketball games there when he was young.

I went to a game there a couple years ago, pretty fun.

Hugh Freeze will be a head coach in the SEC one day. He'll eventually be as well thought of as his good friend Gus Malzahn.

The man is a rising star.

If Memphis doesn't beat Austin Peay by at least 14 points then U of M football deserves to be boycotted by the entire city.

That's good because they are already being boycotted. Fans are embarrassed and concerned that the football debacle not only affects their ability to get into a conference, but ends up seeping into basketball as well.

Yes and it will probably Ole Miss. They are really high on him down there.

Yep. Was interim HC there after the Shrimp Boat Captain (Orgeron) was canned and a few thought he was good enough to be named HC but he didn't have the name recognition or overall experience necessary. Lots of folks were upset when he wasn't named OC for Nutt. He had a nice run in 08-09 as a small school HC, applied for the Memphis job and was named a finalist, but they foolishly opted for Porter. Ark St was a good destination for him, though.

I agree with you, Ole Miss is the most likely destination. That fanbase really likes Freeze and he really knows the state well after being the recruiting coordinator for them under O. I'd bet a large sum of money he's the next guy there when Nutt is fired.

Memphis really missed on him. I mean REALLY missed.

And the sad thing is, he really wanted the Memphis job.

Great job, RC.

Hindsight is 20/20 as they say. Freeze was a HS coach with only a bit of College experience. Porter was College position coach and a recruiting coordinator. Neither had a resume that would knock anyone over and both apparently wanted the job.

Still, seems like Freeze can coach circles around Porter though.

I agree. Which is why Memphis fan should know that ship has sailed with Freeze. No way he goes to Memphis now.

Yup. Memphis burned it's bridge with Freeze. Next stop for Freeze could be a BCS program, if he can build a consistent program at ASU.

The only reason Freeze got the Ole Miss job to begin with was Oher. He was part of that package and helped steer Oher away from UT to Ole Miss.

True enough but, he used that as an in road. Everything he has done since that point has been impressive. I don't think that diminishes his talents.

And then they made Freeze's character out to be a complete idiot in the movie. :p
