Metal, revisited

Dragonforce is pretty sick- if you can stand the prog. rock lyrical cheese. Musically, these guys thrash circles around anyone else out right now.

We listened to their cd's and bashed them continuously. Then we went to see them with He is Legend, Chimaira, and Killswitch and they blew me out of the water. They are still a little too hair bandish for me, but damn can those guys play guitar.

On a side note, Chimaira was awesome that night as well while I was severely disappointed by Killswitch.

I think that esactun asked about a metal scene in Ktown earlier and with the Valarium openeing, it looks like this place in pulling in heavier acts. I would love to see Clutch in May and just might make it up for that show. Here is the pollstar listing for shows coming up

Seriously. I've been playing guitar for about 7 years now, and listening to a lot of classically influenced and other shred. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Jason Becker (Cacophony mainly). I honestly wouldn't feel too much discomfort in saying Dragonforce's Herman Li is possibly the most talented guitarist to have ever lived.

I would have no problem agreeing with you. He's amazing.

I just can't get into the prog stuff that much... while I admire their musical talent, it's just not my cup of tea. My cousin tries constantly to get me to listen to these bands (he burnt me 50 cds one time of these bands, no joke)... there's only so much Dream Theatre one man can take. Bands like Pyramaze, etc.... just not my thing.

Apparently that stuff is HUGE overseas.

I agree with you volsforever27, 80% of prog-metal is unlistenable by normal standards. Most artists are concerned with cramming in as much technicality as possible, and usually at the expense of actually making a good song.

To each their own, though.

A friend's band is opening up for Dillinger Escape Plan, The Bled, and Heavy Heavy Low Low here in April. So I get to check that out.

Anybody going to the warped tour? I'll be back home for the summer (Kansas City) and am probably 90% going. I'm just now getting into As I Lay Dying so I'd really like to see them. I also am dying to see August Burns Red and Norma Jean live. And I definitely wouldn't mind seeing Maylene again.

I think Sky Eats Airplane is coming here before too long and I really like them. They may have quite possibly the worst band name ever but I like it that they have a different sound than anyone else

Nah. I've already seen all the bands I like at the Portland stop.

Dug up this old thread to let all the metal-heads know that Lamb Of God has a new album coming out on Feb 24 called wrath. I am looking forward to it.

I saw Trivium and The Showdown a few nights ago. The Showdown brought it as always, but Trivium blew me away. They didn't miss a note the whole night. I also saw Job for a Cowboy a couple weeks ago.

Jeff Loomis is better technically and musically!:p

I can't get enough of Opeth and I've been getting into Death lately. Chuck Schuldiner was pretty cool.

Opeth really hasn't been that great lately. The last two albums only have a handful of good songs.

They never approach albums the same way and they've lost two staple band members so they've changed it up a bit but they've never put out a mediocre album.

The last two albums are the only ones that had songs on them that I absolutely can't stand listening to.
