Play smart. The conversation rate is under 50%. If you get some kind of mismatch like Oregon used to do then fine but otherwise take the points. By your logic why not go for 2 every time? I assume you’ve watched a lot of football and how often do you see teams chasing points because they go for 2 too early? It’s just smart football. Again, if you want to line up like Oregon used to and try to exploit a matchup advantage that’s totally different. In other words, always be conservative until forced to be otherwise.
You rarely see teams chasing points for that reason because it is not the conservative play. Regardless, what would be wrong with that? The coaches are looking for 'the matchup' all the time. So. Find one. It's what Belechick does. It's what Saban does. They win. A lot.Play smart. The conversation rate is under 50%. One thing I do agree with Space on is that you don’t always use that chart. Sometimes that thing gets in the way of good common sense. Plus, sometimes you do just make a gut call based on the flow of the game or to catch teams off guard. We just have to look at the analytics to be honest. People laugh at the “chart” but there is a reason every professional team has them, uses them, and GM’s in all sports are more and more supposed to have a handle on them.
I don’t recall seeing Saban or Belechik going for 2 anymore than any other coach. Oregon is the only team I recall that regularly looked for mismatches on conversion attempts. You rarely see teams chasing points for that reason because it is not the conservative play. Thank you. That's my point. Unfortunately, I don't think a lot of coaches can see past their clipboard. And I am not saying I can coach better than they can, but you do have to admit that there are numerous times each season when clock management kills a team. clock. management.
