Disgraced lawyer Michael Avenatti is Sentenced to 2.5 years in Prison for trying to shake down Nike for $25M after issuing a tearful apology in court - as ex-client Stormy Daniels says she 'can't wait' to go after him too

  • Michael Avenatti, 50, was sentenced in a Manhattan federal court on Thursday to 30 months in prison for trying to extort Nike for $25 million
Michael Avenatti, the lawyer who gained fame by representing porn star Stormy Daniels against President Donald Trump, has been sentenced to 2.5 years in prison over a $25 million Nike extortion scheme.

The brash California lawyer, 50, was sentenced in a Manhattan federal court on Thursday after issuing a tearful and groveling apology to the judge as he decried his fame, saying 'TV and Twitter mean nothing'.

He will serve the 2.5 year sentence before three years of supervised release. Avenatti, who has been under house arrest, was not remanded in custody and will start his prison sentence at a later date.

He was accused of threatening to expose allegations Nike was funneling payments to college basketball players unless the company paid him millions of dollars to conduct an internal investigation.

I went looking for the Brian Stelter interview where Stelter was touting Avenatti for president and it seems to be washed away.

MSNBC gives Avenatti prison sentence less than 2 minutes of coverage after inviting him on-air over 100 times

The Liberal network completely avoided the breaking news on Thursday

Jailtime doesn't necessarily mean airtime, at least at MSNBC.

MSNBC once had a steamy love affair with Michael Avenatti when he dominated the news cycle with his attacks against former President Donald Trump, but the liberal network appeared to get over its anti-Trump crush when the disgraced lawyer made negative headlines of his own.

However, it was mostly crickets from the Peacock network that once adored the #Resistance warrior.

After avoiding the breaking news on Thursday, MSNBC dedicated less than two minutes of coverage to Avenatti's sentencing on Friday, according to Grabien transcripts.

The two programs that bothered to mention Avenatti were "Way Too Early with Kasie Hunt" and "Morning Joe," completely moving on from the subject by 6:15 am ET.

None of MSNBC's most-watched primetime hosts, Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell, mentioned Avenatti once in the combined six hours of coverage between Thursday and Friday.

MSNBC may have run for the hills, but it wasn't long ago when the network ran into Avenatti's arms, inviting him on-air a whopping 108 times within one year, according to a study from NewsBusters.

I'd just like to know why the federal guidelines called for a 9 year sentence and this turd got nearly a fourth of that? Had he been a conservative he would have gotten twice the recommended sentence.
heard he was crying like a little femdog during the sentencing... he still has a few criminal charges to get through.

I won't disagree with anything you said here, but the selective coverage of stories involving either deviant and/or criminal behavior, applies to all of the cable news networks... including Fox News.

The prime time opinion shows on Fox News spent a great deal of time covering sexual harassment allegations when they were made against their competitors, such as Matt Lauer from NBC's "Today" morning show, or Charlie Rose from "This Morning" on CBS. Fox News also covered Sen. Al Franken's sexual harassment scandal extensively.

... but when it came to sexual harassment allegations against their own personnel, whether it was Roger Ailes, Bill O'Reilly, Eric Boling or Ed Henry? Those stories were mostly ignored by Fox News. This remained true even after each of those 4 men had been fired.

I agree. They did some reporting on the Matt Gaetz allegations though. I agree they I don't remember them attacking their own but none do. You could get into company confidentiality issues when that normally goes through spokespeople or your communications department.
