Michael Rosenberg's Column...

Pretty self-righteous if you ask me...who doesn't act in their own interests?

Bruce Pearl is no worse than any other coach in college basketball.

No matter what he or anyone else says, he is no different than any other coach.

His snitching aside.

Nonsense. All other college basketball coaches are high character individuals who have great moral fiber.

Especially the ones who spend 20 years talking about being shunned because they "do what's right."

Right, because all the other ones usually admit to being cheaters at every opportunity.

You make it sound like he opened every press conference with a statement about being shunned for doing whats right. Can you provide a handful of links where Pearl has spent 20 years talking about his incident? Honestly, I don't recall this being mentioned often, but I'm quite forgetful in my old age. I would like to read them for my own personal education.

Find any substantial profile written about Pearl in the last 20 years. It'll be there.

Are you serious? Pearl has talked about that over and over and over. You just need to face reality that Pearl held himself out to be some paragon of honesty and turned out to be a complete fraud.

You should probably start with the Milwaukee Magazine piece that has been linked here before. After that, I'd say the profile Grant Wahl did in, if memory serves me correct, October of '07 for Sports Illustrated would be an enlightening read. That should get you started.

I'm not denying that he's talked about it over and over, I'd just like to read some examples. My memory isn't very good.

I don't know that Pearl held himself out to be a paragon of honesty, and I certainly don't label him a complete fraud based on the official information I've read.

I'm not condoning his actions but based on what I've read from the media, just about every school is probably guilty of illegal contact. But Pearl got caught and has to suffer the consequences. He certainly made matters worse by lying about it.

"The only concern was recruiting -- could I recruit?" Pearl says. "I would have to live to a higher standard. Having cooperated with the NCAA, there would be people out there saying, 'If I get a chance, I'm going to nail him.' I had to be above reproach."

Pearl on recruiting at the Div. I level after the Illinois incident. Interesting.

Thanks. Not sure how to find those, but I will give it a shot. If anyone can provide links that would be helpful. And if possible, I'd like to read something written a bit more recently.

When was that quote made?

I don't interpret that as Pearl saying he is perfect. I think he's saying that, if he isn't, people will be out to get him. It looks like it was a pretty accurate statement.

This one will be more up your alley about Pearl acting perfect. This was him in '05 talking about whether he would turn Illinois in again if he was in the same situation.

"Regrettably, I would because of principle. I'm a bit of an idealist. A lot of people got hurt in that situation, and it's unfortunate. But it's just a process that has to take place."

Thanks LawVol. That's a good one. Do you have a link? I'd like to read the full article.

Any others?

You ought to check out the SI article as well that Hat referenced. It's a good read that is exactly right in its assessment, imo.

I've searched Bruce Pearl's name along with the author but can't seem to find anything.

This is all so depressing. I'd rather watch UT-Oregon replays than follow our hypocritical coach's drama and listen to my fellow vol fans give him the "hero worship" treatment right now.

I'm not saying I'm sure it's going to be awful. I'm simply pointing out that an illegal home visit and some other contact violations are nowhere near as serious as lying to the investigators.

And that is what's gonna come back and bite him in the a$$. And for the record, I'm a Pearlophile.
