Michelle Marciniak's Take

I have said this before, but I ill say it again. There are several problems with the offense. First, they have no idea how to attack a zone offense. Their two guards dribble the ball round the perimeter while the other 3 players stand around until the clock is down to 10 seconds. Then they try to force the ball inside to Russell which results in 1} a turnover, 2) a wild attempt by Russell with 3 defensive players hanging on her, or 3) a missed shot with 1 of 3 defensive player getting the defensive rebound. There no attempt tp penetrate the zone, draw a defensive player, and dish off down low are to the baseline. I can go on and on, but the point is, we don not have an offensive scheme which can score except for the behind the 3 point line. We will not win the close games when we have 20 to 28 turnovers a game. We will not win close games when we miss half of our layup. I do not know if these deficiencies are a result of poor coaching , poor players, or the lack of motivation. I know that we will not win another NCAA with our current offensive scheme.

Michelle Marciniak's Take

From Facebook -

"I will remind everyone that in 1996, we were 5 years without a Championship"

Was it 5 years, or 4 seasons?

Either way, can someone help better-explain how it is that the accomplishments of the recent 4 full seasons can be legitimately compared to the accomplishments of the '91, 92, 93 and 94 seasons?

Seriously, have you truly ever coached a game? Do players always do as instructed? Does emotion or fatigue or whatever not distract from the plan?

Come on.

A team reflects its coach's personality...I have yet to meet the player with the intensity and ambition I possess. So, yes, until I get one that outworks me,, they will do as instructed. . . It is a coach's ultimate goal, to not be needed by their players....Only then are the players ready for a next level.

Ever watch fear factor or MTV's the challenge?...fatigue is mental.

Same results. The roster accolades are a feather in the cap, but you guys are saying it's just about wins & losses. Doing less with more or more with less shouldn't matter for you folks who see nothing but the bottom line

Did you see the tears in Cedes' eyes?
SHe gave us another year of her life for one thing.
To win it all.

Good for Michelle. Nice words. She's wrong.

The players get scholarships to just play basketball. Yes, we all want them to be successful students and quality people, but their primary purpose for UT is to play basketball. The coaches get paid extremely well for the players to perform at a high level. If the players are talented and highly recruited, which they are, they should be giving their best efforts, which they are for how they have been developed and trained. Yet, the level of play is dropping from the program's traditionally high levels. There have been more "firsts" of the wrong type in Holly's tenure than at any time in the multiple decades that Pat coached.

Sorry in advance to who this offends as that is not my intention - Pat's reach into the LV program from the grave should not continue. It is currently being used by people in charge and with access to the program for their own purposes and not for the best interests of the program and the players. Her reach should extend for the great principles she instilled in the players as well as her own competitive achievement. But it stops there. Having known Pat personally, she has told the world (pre-dementia) that the program comes before anybody else including herself. If UT cannot or will not do the right thing and provide a quality, elite type coaching staff for these elite players who can develop them into the best they can be as individuals and teammates, then de-emphasize the program and reduce the drain on financial resources it has become. The slow train down to mediocrity is killing the program, increasingly draining UTAD resources, and Holly is embarrassing herself in the process. She was a highly valued recruiter and assistant for Pat. That was her peak as a coach and it is painfully obvious.

I realize they will give her the last year on her contract. They should not, but they will.

In addition, don’t we get the 5 stars like UCONN, Baylor, ND, Louisville, Texas, etc. or do we get the bad uncoachable 5 stars? No, we get the same players with the same potential. Look at Mississippi State, they have 2 5 stars. The difference is coaching. Why is it so hard for Holly supporters to get it? HOLLY IS NOT A HEADCOACH!!!!

It's amazing how she and Alexis Hornbuckle were both coached by Pat and Holly and have virtually completely different takes on the situation.

Spinderella is FOS on this subject.

During one of the Lady Vols' game this season, the announcer (Gail G, I think) was talking about how hard Kara L worked while at TN and how she would sneak into the gym when it was closed to practice by herself. The announcer then stated something that CHW said about some of her players over the last few years not lifting or working out. Gail G went off on the players for their lack of work ethic and also blamed the coach for allowing those players to play.

If what Gail G stated during the game was true, then CHW should be fired. You cannot allow players to determine whether they will practice or lift. The coach does that. If the players do not respond, then they get benched or lose their scholarship. It should not matter who the player(s) is. No player is above the team. There are a number of examples where team chemistry was destroyed by giving special treatment to selected players.

Was Gail G talking about the LVs or her own team when she was coaching? Just making sure I understand.

For what it’s with, I know for a fact Jaime was in the gym shooting late Saturday night. I know for fact Meme has put in extra time shooting this season, as have several others.

I don't think Marciniak left Notre Dame to come to Tennessee to dabble in Southern dialect and to freelance on the basketball floor.

She came for effective coaching and the opportunity to compete for National Championships.

I think we all hoped that Warlick would be successful; to not be Pat Summitt but to continue to cultivate the blue collar work ethic among these blue star athletes. On the contrary, she is almost the antithesis. She is casual, complacent, unprepared, on the defensive, confused, non-demanding, etc.

Sure, the players have accountability in this. They have to go out and make the plays. They should have a level of competitiveness despite coaching/teaching, good or bad. But the buck stops at the top. She should know that and accept that. The coach's heart pumps the blood throughout the team.

None of us are in the gym everyday, of course. But resounding evidence suggests that there is underachievement, and it appears perpetual.

It really bothered me on Sunday knowing that we had a renowned shooter (Dunbar) that potentially could have helped us, but she has never been incorporated as a weapon. She seemingly has been castigated as a defensive liability. I find that ironic seeing that no one plays defense correctly out there. It's "hit-or-miss" as to what you are going to get on defense: blow-bys, no help, open space breakdowns on defense, baseline give aways, etc. Under Summitt defense and rebounding were givens. Summitt utitlized shooters/weapons like Brittany Jackson, Misty Greene, Sidney Spencer, et. al. even if she didn't approve of their defense.

I certainly hope the admin is not made up of people who think like you because they would be enabling the program into mediocrity. Losers always find "legit" reasons why they lost and you certainly have provided a plethora of them. We had no business losing to Oregon State at home yesterday, but the sad part is that most of us knew it was coming.

Okay. So according to Michelle's chastisement of us fans, we really don't need a coach.

We only need someone to recruit, and then send these clueless players out there to make things happen.

Sorry, Michelle. You were a great player, but your comments are so off the wall, they are almost laughable. Pat Summitt never sent players onto the floor without being prepared.

And Pat never stood over on the sideline with her arms folded; watching her players throw careless passes; throw the ball up in the air hoping for a miracle instead of shooting it; and anyone not playing defense very quickly found their place on the sideline.

Good try, Michelle, but your argument is too ridiculous to be taken seriously.

Holly is in over her head, and our great program is becoming a laughing stock.

It is time to get a real coach who knows how to coach; how to motivate; how to teach; and how to win.[/QUOTE/]

CHW has stated, "I don't know" several times in interviews when asked how to fix the team's problems. Pat never did that. If Pat didn't know, then she would go find out. How is it that we have as many McD All-Americans as anyone in the country, but often get outplayed by teams with lesser talent? Might it just be the coaching?

Amen

The players should do as the coaches say but we have a coach that sits behind a microphone each loss and says "I don't know" or "I don't have a clue" That's exactly how the team plays, so my eyes this is HW's team. Totally lost!

From Facebook -

Ok so it's been 4 hours and I have some words, not many but some as it relates to our #ladyvols.

I was a player, so was Abby and Pashen and Tamika and Semeka and Chamique and Candace and Dawn and Shelley and Lisa and Pam and and and......

And I'm sorry but you just can't blame this on the coach.

Players play. Players make plays. Players win games. Players make free throws or they don't. Players are on the court. Players are in control. Players contest shots. Players get defensive stops. Players make or cause turnovers. Players take charges or punk out and don't sacrifice their bodies to do so. Players hit chippies or they don't. Players dive after loose balls or they choose not to.

Players are taught by their leaders, their coaches and I cannot stress enough the experience of this staff who is coaching these kids....is beyond what any other program can ask for.

The grass is NOT greener on the other side folks.

Players need to mature. Players need to value winning. Players need to feel the pain. So the next time when pain is looming, it feels different and therefore they will get a different outcome.

I really don't care if some fans don't agree with what I am saying but we have great players and great players need to step up as they always have in the TN program. Onus is on the players.

I will remind everyone that in 1996, we were 5 years without a Championship and Pat was as stressed as anyone EVER. She put the blame ON US to win. Mark my word, it was ours to win or not.

So please before you throw a baby out with the bathwater in blaming Holly, just remember it's a journey, not a sprint. In today's Me first, Video game reset world, everyone wants to get rid of the coach and think it will make it all right. Not so people.

Holly is a Pat's protege. She's got her blue print mapped in her body, soul and mind. You won't get any better, any closer to Pat than Holly.

I'd like everyone to think about this post as we tend not to blame the players only the coaches. Trust me, Pat blamed us and held us responsible.

Time for the players to own up. Whether anyone likes to read this or not, it's true and you can't argue it because I have been there and done that. 18 to 21 year olds are adults.

They have been feeling the same pain for the last 4-5 years and the next year its the same results.

Her and Holly must be BFFs
If Holly had the blue print in her mind, body and soul then its not Pats

Barnes takes three star players and turns them into better players every season they are here.
Holly takes five star players and in half a season turns them into different players totally.
Mercedes got bigger and stronger and better as an offensive player. She still can't play defense.
Nared shot 35 percent when she got here still 35 percent as a senior. Reynolds looked promising as a freshman her best season got worse every season after that. Graves great as a freshman never got better that was her best season.
I am scared this may be Davis best season we'll see.
Westbrook and Hayes have to get better because second half of the season was a lot worse for them that the first half.

Does that make it better? Barnes can't recruit & Vols had 16 wins the first two seasons with no postseason birth. Now he's a hero for something Holly's done every season - and Holly's to be fired?

I'm just playing devil's advocate because I am really proud of TN.

One has nothing to do with another. I'm actually not convinced that Barnes will ever be so great in March as he hasn't been anywhere else, but his situation is apples to oranges with regards to Warlick. Her program has a higher ceiling than does Barnes' and less competition, as well.

It's great to have pride in Tennessee. It's quite another to have some Pollyanna attitude towards reality.

Love your "Lyin or cryin they dyin" !

Michelle didn't post it in here. I did so folks could see that there are informed people out there that don't blame Holly to the extent they do on VN.

Holly is the head coach and she is part of the problem. People keep trying to lay the blame on the players, but players do not control the calling of timeouts, players look up to coaches to come up with plans when the other team stops our offense, players depend upon coaches to come up with solutions to a soft defense in the paint, good coaches come up with solutions to stop multiple turnovers, good coaches know how to motivate, good coaches know how to send a message when players are not trying their best, good coaches do not get on pressers and constantly say they don’t know why things went to hell in a hand cart, etc. No matter if we want to admit it or not, Holly is not a top 15 coach. She had a good heart and is doing as much as she can to bring the team back to the glory days, however, wanting to and having the ability to return Tennessee to the top 5 or even top 10 are two different things.
