Michigan's system is based on spacing, driving, drawing, and dishing. If I'm Michigan, I'm setting a lot of 5-1 screens forcing Brian Williams to get out there and hedge, which he's not very good at. Expect to see Williams get out late and foul Morris or get out late where Morris is able to turn the corner and score or kick out for the three. The question then will become whether Pearl wants to switch the screen or take Williams out in favor of a better athlete, Fields or Hall. This will also be a concern with 4-1 screens with Harris. If Williams or Harris switch onto Morris, he will have an absolute field day. This is a game where fundamental hedging and recovering will be key. Let's hope that's the path Pearl chooses.

Very sound game analysis. I commend you :good!:

Why? It seemed to make sense to me.

I'm nit referring to the analysis. I was referring the the last sentence.

Seems like it's a way to not give pearl any credit. If we defend well, it will be something even a message board expert could have analyzed correctly.

FYI not taking a shot at the op, just the way I read it.

Do we really switch on those 5/4-1 screens often? It always seems like we hard hedge and recover anyway. Either way, ball screen defense hasn't been our specialty and I'm sure we're gonna get exposed on Friday...especially considering whose on the other sideline.

Pearl has shown the ability to really defensively gameplan well in big games (Pitt, Nova, Vandy). I expect the plan to be solid. Not sure how one could read what I wrote as some sort of backdoor way of criticizing Pearl.

I was just thinking the same thing. I can't remember seeing Williams switching a lot and chasing PG's.

I don't really mind taking digs at pearl. And I could have misjudged the intent.

Yes, I've seen Pearl do that quite a bit, especially on good outside shooting teams whose personnel are similar in size. Granted, I haven't seen it as much this year, but we haven't really played a team like Michigan. This is game where we simply cannot switch ballscreens for Morris; I'd consider trapping off the screen or just playing traditional hedge and recover.

This is really a concern of mine for this game; after seeing Florida dismantle us with ball screens, I'd expect to see a heavy dose of it in this game. And the major problem is, Michigan shoots the ball well from three from 1-4.

What I'm thinking is that Pearl could possibly motivated to try it because he doesn't think Williams can hedge and recover effectively enough to keep Morris from turning the corner. This kid's much different from most of the PG's we've faced. He's a 6'5 athlete that can really finish at the rim. I think the wiser choice would be to trap off the screen or get Williams out of the game.

Get Williams out of the game as in bring in Fields or actually go small to match up?

I'd probably go with Fields or Hall if Williams struggles with it. Many will cringe when I say this, but this could be a game I could see playing Pearl at the 5 a little bit, as he is by far our best player at hedging and recovering. But, I'd primarily want to be going with more size (Fields and Hall) to try to kill them on the offensive glass.

I'm extremely nervous about both Harris and Williams on these screens. Williams has been surprisingly agile on his hedges from what I've seen, but Tobias has seemed very lost on screens throughout the season.

I wouldn't hedge at all. Morris can drive, and while he's a decent enough shooter, he isn't someone who will kill you from 20 feet out. My advice for guarding Harris would be to go under screens and force him to shoot. You also would take some of his driving lanes to dish and distribute, which means you don't have to help out as much and can cover the shooters.

You bring up good points. This team has shown no ability to play good defense consistently off of ball screens at the top of the key, and I don't anticipate that changing against Michigan.. Our best defense may have to be them shooting in an unfamiliar gym.

My thoughts exactly. Hedging is not the only way to defend a ball screen. I've seen us "ice" them as well as just go under them.

You also said in your Michigan guard scouting report that the best way to defend Morris is to go under screens cause he shoots a low percentage from 3... so why are you concerned with 1-4/5 hedges?

We absolutely have to force him to shoot. But, you have to stay in front of Morris. Even going under screens, it is going to take some help from our bigs to keep him from turning the corner. He has to be kept on the perimeter; hedging or trapping the screen will be about the only way to ensure that Morris does not get in the paint on us.
