Michigan's New Nike Contract

Several posts like this, but you're was first so I'll just respond to one. In America? Texas probably. Worldwide? Tennessee is more. I'm not talking merchandise sold. I'm talking you show the mascots, logos, colors, and more people will know who Tennessee is than Texas.

But that would require all of us in the conversation to have traveled the world or to study or know a large number of people in different countries, and I know not everyone in this discussion has that, so its not a point worth discussing.

Schembeckler and Carr < Neyland and Fulmer

Carr has a better win percentage than Fulmer, but Fulmer has 30 more wins and only 10 more losses.

But hey, if you want any coach over Neyland, have at it. I'll take him against any coach with both sides have equal talent.

But, seeing as you didn't even mention half of my argument (that an all time TN team, led by guys like Manning, White, Henderson, etc. would beat most any all time greats team at any other school) I'll presume that you don't seem to use rationale in debating, as ignoring any point of a discussion is a sign of not having a way to beat that point.

However, I'll let you guys keep fretting fretting over why Nike overpayed a top 10 all time school with one of the hottest (or the hottest) head coaching hire in years.

Fulmer also coached 4 more years but I'm sure that has nothing to do with more wins.

I didn't say Schembechler was better than Neyland, nor did I say our coaching tree isn't better overall. I stated and proved its not light years ahead, as you claimed.

I'm just glad I can wear both UT and Michigan gear with my Nikes starting next year.

Then why assert your incorrect statement? Most people outside of Knoxville or the SEC think Texas when they see our logo.

Unfortunately, this is accurate. A lot of people in America see our logo and think Texas. Yeah, our color is distinct but so is there's. Yeah, our mascot is distinct but so is there's. Texas is just a bigger name and a bigger brand that people are more apt to recognize.

I rarely had a problem with my T being recognized when I lived out west. I think that issue is way overblown by people who've only left the south for vacation

I doubt what "tier", historic records, recent success (or lack thereof) has as much to do with it. I think it has more to do with alumni size/fan base size..

Michigan living alumni: 540,000
Tennessee living alumni: 220,000

I would imagine the fan ratio is similar too, but there's no real way to measure that. All about making that money.

looks like Go Blue, just layed the trump card

Too bad contracts don't translate into wins. Don't guess I will be buying anything Nike since I am All Vol and HATE THE BIG TEN ESPECIALLY MICHIGAN and OHIO STATE.

You have any proof at all of this, or are you just going by your very limited experience? That's quite a claim to make.

Honestly, when people talk about the blue blood teams in CFB, outside of this state...Tennessee isn't mentioned that much and I believe that is at least partially on Tennessee. We haven't done nearly a good enough job promoting and selling our history, imo. A lot of people don't realize how successful Tennessee has been. They dont know that Tennessee has won 800+ games, that we have 6 NCs, or that we have been to 50 bowls.

Keep preaching bro.

Huh? He sure as hell wasn't "more than on par with Fulmer" on January 1st, 2002 in Orlando, Florida which is the only time that a head to head comparison actually mattered... and conference titles are not exactly a fair contrast to use when one coach is in the SEC and the other is in the Big Ten. That's not apples to oranges, it's apples to fried chicken.

Both the SEC and the Big 10 were dominated by two teams at the time. Carr had more success against his rival (6-7) than Fulmer did (5-12).

If you mean Ohio St. to his Michigan, then you'd need to judge Fulmer against Alabama, which he did much better. I get Fulmer sucked against Florida but pretty much everyone did. It just so happens in Michigan's case the other big team was their biggest rival, whereas our biggest rival wasn't very good then.

No, I mean the team he had to consistently beat in order to win the conference. In Carr's case it just so happens that it was also his #1 rival.

I give Carr a lot of credit for beating Ohio St in '96 in Columbus which kept the Buckeyes from winning the national championship. Ohio St had a more talented team that year and that was huge. Carr also never screwed the pooch the way Fulmer did in '05 and '08 (well, maybe he did a little bit with Appy St in '07 but they turned it around later). However, Carr also continued the Michigan tradition of flopping in the Rose Bowl (1-3) and you just can't compare Florida to Ohio St in the 90's. I would argue that if Tennessee had played in the Big Ten from 1995 to 2001 that we would have won the conference title every year except for 1996 and 2000 because I think we were better than Michigan in 1997.

...and just as a meaningless side note, most people don't know that both Lloyd Carr (Hawkins County) and John Cooper (Knoxville) were born in east Tennessee even though neither has any ties at all to UT. Much like Steve Spurrier.

I always hate the "if team X had played in conference y" arguments. Nobody knows what would happen in that scenario because playing in a different conference would impact everything from recruiting to play calling. The fact is you play in the conference you play in and you either beat the competition or you don't.

I generally hate "if" scenarios because when you get down to it, they're fantasy. It's not so much discussing it, it's those that act like it's foregone conclusion that x would have happened. Like people that swear we would have beaten Oregon in 2010 had there not been a weather delay.

Ducks like water and it rains in the pacific NW. They had a home field advantage.

Which simply reminds me of Carr and Mike DeBord's win over FL, 2007. It's time for TN to beat FL again, this year.

Wow, we really are the new Alabama.

"We might be unsuccessful and most irrelevant but I remember back almost 15 years ago when we did something relevant!"

All I was trying say is I don't give a damn what Michigan's deal is but by all means carry on with the negative slant.
