Memphis news station is reporting that Mizzou AD claims Memphis has made zero contact with them

Calipari is still believed to be meeting with prominent Memphis booster Billy Dunavant of Dunavant Enterprises as well as another booster.

Via work, I know some people that are pretty close with these said Memphis boosters. Through some of the conversations they had today, the consensus that these boosters were going to make one last stab at swaying Cal, however Cal was in fact lobbying for Barbee. These same people were saying the same thing about Cal not taking any current players if Barbee got the job.

As for the FedEx money comments. Reports are that Fred Smith met with Calipari tonight as well, but keep in mind that FedEx is having some financial problems so they may not be able to bail Memphis out this time.

Hat - one of these boosters said that there was some word that the Laurie family you mentioned has had some issues with Mizzou of late and have expressed interest in helping Memphis. I think this was mainly thought to be help to retain Cal though.

All of this transpired after the reports that Memphis had sought permission to talk to Anderson. Now there are rumors that the Memphis boosters have matched money with the UK offer, and included some sort of long term incentive that is unbelievable. They have made every effort to retain Cal and it is now up to him to decide. This is far more than I expected from Memphis. In all likelihood he still goes to Kentucky, but the Tiger boosters have made it a tougher decision than it initially looked like. Give them credit for putting up a fight, most places wouldn't even try to match Kentucky. Of course they might know that Kentucky will just up their offer and theyre just doing this to raise the price on them. I believe anything is possible.

There seems to be some conflicting news on this though. There is talk of a 10 million dollar annuity and some other stuff, but the consensus that I got from most people that either had very strong AD ties or strong booster ties was that Memphis could not match the money.

Gary Parrish at CBS has a pretty good blog entry on why Cal just might be pushing Barbee so hard.

Fred Smith would not go to Cal's house to talk about Tony Barbee. They are trying to keep Cal. It may be futile but they are trying. Meetings and phone calls will probably continue through the night, and when the dust settles, he'll probably go to Kentucky anyway.

I heard that also. How bad does this city want to keep Cal here, they are throwing everything they can at Cal to stay. Next person ringing the door bell...King Willie. :)

Fedex has been giving Memphis players summer jobs and internships for a long time. Maybe Fred is putting the pressure on for his longtime support of the program.

FedEx has their name on a building whose biggest tenant might become the Memphis Grizzlies. I'd scramble my @$$ off too if that was the case for me.

I just do not think that FedEX can justify a lot of help when they have forced a lot of execs to take pay cuts and are laying off 900 plus.

3000 salaried employees are going to be laid off across the board.

It's not the company's money. It is their execs money. Plus Bill Dunavant who is old cotton money and several others. The idea is that the city can't afford to just lose Calipari without a fight. Nobody else is going to put 18500 people in FedEx Forum for a saturday noon game against rice.

Didn't you read what he said about the business problems and all? Or are you just trying to stir up trouble?
Edit: directed at troublemaker dickens.

He didn't do that anyway.

2007 average attendance for Memphis ~ 14,000

We're talking about 2008. And what's wrong with 14,000 butts in seats to see Rice get demolished? Besides, led never mentioned the word sold out. There, take some of your own medicine.
