About what I figured since he has done a more than outstanding job at Vandy, kind of like Pearl at UT.
Yeah, compare Bobby Johnson's winning percentage at Vandy to Gerry Di Nardo or Woody Widenhofer. He's really tearing it up. I'm stunned Notre Dame or USC didn't swoop in and hire him.

First bowl victory in 20+ years at Vandy = outstanding job.

And I swear, you Pearlhaters have to be the same person. If anybody argues with one of you, others follow with force. Do you get your jollies, beat off or get a boner when you defend the other Pearlhaters. I'm thinking so!! LMAO

With such absurdly low standards for what constitutes "outstanding," I'm not surprised that Sweet 16 appearances reduce you to slobbering adoration.

I'd rather be top 16 in the country, then bottom 16 like you'd have it, Troll....... :eek:lol:

I'd rather be reasonable than have expectations that will never, ever be met in your eyes. When Johnson came to Vandy a bowl game was laughable, at best. If I heard a Vandy fan calling for Johnson's head, I'd laugh my butt off. He's the best thing to happen to that program in a long, long time.
When Pearl came to Tennessee, SEC titles and Sweet 16s were laughable, at best. And outside of a few haters on this board, nobody wants Pearl to go anywhere. I promise the national meadia, etc. would laugh their butt off if Pearl was ever run off by the fans since, just like Johnson, he's the best thing to happen to this program in a quarter century.
And yes, this year he's proven he can win "NCAA games." He'll advance past the Sweet 16 at some point in his career at UT. Nothing he's done thus far says he won't.
An amazing job by him. He'll continue to do an amazing job!! Thanks goodness Pearl is the UT coach!!

No, I actually read the thread and the article that was referenced. You see, I am a big believer in having some idea what I am talking about.

Too bad it still doesn't give you a brain or an opinion worthy of salt......... :eek:lol:

I would have to generally agree with the article. His organized chaos style with players flying all over the entire court just isn't cutting it in the tournament for whatever reason. Maybe it has to do with fatigue and the prospect of playing so many tough consecutive teams that can adapt better to the press.

I've also never been a big believer of Pearl playing so many guys. I understand that you want a deep bench, especially in March, but players can't get in rhythm if they're always worried about playing time.

If Pearl can use the press sparingly and actually allow his defense to get in a half court set, I think we can be more successful in the tournament. I think he'll figure it out.

The article says that full court pressure is a gimmick, and that teams that win the NCAA don't press.

Jerry Tarkanian disagrees.

Not really. Tark will be the first one to say he finally won the NCAA title because he had arguably the best halfcourt defensive team in the history of college basketball and Larry Johnson to throw the ball to in the post.

So you think it can be used effectively so long as it doesn't come at the expense of the halfcourt D? Or does it always come at the expense of the halfcourt D?

If you've got good enough defenders, it doesn't hurt to extend the floor defensively on occasion. My point is that you can't expect the press to be your main weapon against elite competition. How many teams press in the NBA? None. That's because they'd spend all night taking the ball out of the net after the other team makes another layup. Counting on the other guy to make a mistake is a fool's errand when the other guy is really good.

I'm not referring to a 5-man press, but full court pressure helps when you're trying to force the other team to burn some clock getting the ball upcourt and set up their offense. And when you're trying to take a player out of his game.

If you've got a quick, tenacious on-ball defender, I've always been a fan of sticking him in the other guy's face for 94 feet and making him work harder on offense than he ever intended.
