Mike Edwards '09 DB

A strong senior season helped Mike Edwards land a scholarship to Tennessee. It also helped him climb the charts in the Ohio Varsity cornerback rankings.
Here's a look at the Top 10 cornerbacks in Ohio's Class of 2009:

  1. Mike Edwards, Cleveland Glenville
  2. Dale Peterman, Youngstown Ursuline
  3. D.J. Hunter, Middletown
  4. Chris Williams, Cincinnati Winton Woods
  5. Patrick White, Pickerington Central
  6. Everett Horne, North College Hill
  7. Romel Dismuke, Cleveland Benedictine
  8. Aunre Davis, Warren Harding
  9. Carlos Hilton, Youngstown East
  10. Eric Page, Holland Springfield
And which cornerbacks have the best attributes?Best lockdown ability: Dale Peterman
Most athletic: Mike Edwards
Most physical: Chris Williams

Kids from Glenville have great speed and can definitely play in the SEC. Ray Small has great potential but he is one of the few that has not lived up to it.

Cleveland Glenville's 4x100 has won a few national championships over the past few years. There is a lot speed up there.

I have a friend in Cleveland who tells me that Ray Small actually has faster track speed than Ginn, but that it just doesn't translate as well onto the gridiron.

That is all true. Ray is still a burner on the field, check in his returns. The coaching staff at Glenville felt Ray Small would be better at Ohio State than Teddy Ginn was. But, I'm more excited about Mike than any other recruit because he is from up here.

I didn't realize we had recruited so many DBs. We are absolutey loaded at that position

“That’s what we’re supposed to do as players, is back up our coach in any situation,” Edwards said. “I believe with him deciding to pick us to come to his school that he will back us up in any situation.

Edwards hopes his work will result in championships for UT.

He said he believes that will happen if his teammates have the same mindset.

“I just want people that are on the same focus as I am and that’s winning a national championship down there in Knoxville,” Edwards said.
:)

I have heard that Mike Edwards is seriously under rated. I look for big things out of this kid.

Edwards has a lot of potential at corner. When he adds some weight he'll be a really good player. I think he could be one of those players that will get faster with added weight. Also when he gets more fluid in coverage he'll be making big plays with his long arms and ball skills.

Unlike the QB position, we could stand to have 8 guys that can be starters (2 deep at each spot)...for the sake of rotating in fresh players without a dropoff and accounting for injuries.
It's good to know that we have enough talent that there should be no question marks at any position, but we need more.

The only thing about Edwards is that I wanna know why OSU didn't offer him. They offer pretty much every good Glenville kid.

their loss is our gain, so no concern IMO. idk why they didnt offer, but according to rivals, they picked up 4 DB's all 4* or higher, and 2 athletes. maybe they just didnt feel that they needed to, given the talent that they brought in?

Not saying this is the case, but sometimes kids just want to go somewhere different. Kind of like the Byrnes SC kids...Miller and Willis (whom I hope we can land both). They stated that they plan to play out of state.
OSU may have known that about Edwards, from discussions with him or his HS coach.

The reason Mike didn't get a Buckeye offer is simply because of grades. He is/was very underrated, and I think UT got a steal. He has all the tools to be an All-SEC DB, and I would of loved to of had him at OSU. Edwards is a great kid and I hope be does well at UT.

Welcome to the board.

I think Kiffin is itching to get HIS players on the field ASAP, and therefore Edwards will have a greater opportunity to get serious playing time early, as opposed to Coach Fulmer, who largely adhered to a seniority policy.

I also noticed that we would make WR's wait til they knew the entire playbook and knew multiple positions and that would sometimes take forever, whereas Kiffin said he's going to focus on using new players where they can contribute. That goes for all positions, from what I understood.

Edwards is definitely the real deal. He and Romel Dismuke, both from Cleveland were by far the most underated DB prospects in Ohio last year.

I've seen Edwards play plenty of times up here and he and Jamie Wood were by far the two best DB's I saw all of last season in the state.
