Mike Farrell on Negative Recruiting, Commitment Flips

I hope Butch gets a reputation for stealing other team's recruits. That's his damn job and it's fair game until the name is on the dotted line.

What a non-issue.

This really is the best response to the OP. Butch is good at stealing other recruits?

Who cares if he did? It's all competition and only a fool would say "well he's currently committed to Ole Miss we'll look elsewhere".

Go get that sum b****

Was all ready to hit the "like" button, but then you said this toward the end of your otherwise excellent post:

I don't see how we can't rise back towards the top of the SEC, barring . . . [a] terrible OC hire.

Not that there is no room for improvement, there is, but Butch Jones has consistently made the right decisions even when others, the majority, have doubted. Do you really think he is suddenly going to step out of that proven pattern and make a colossal mistake in the hiring of an OC?

It's absolutely amazing to me that many of those who proclaimed the hiring of Butch Jones itself as an unqualified disaster for Tennessee football are the same ones lamenting the potential hire of Mike DeBord as OC.

Don't assume too quick! I'm for DeBord as OC. I trust in Butch's decision making, and I don't believe there will be a disaster OC hire. I think a disaster would be more likely to happen if we paid someone like Norvell a ton of cash to come in and change an already good thing. Don't get me wrong, his offense is great, but he obviously wants to be a head coach one day and wants to sell his system. Butch said on 104.5 today that we are on the cusp of greatness. To change too much now would be a mistake.

Also, I don't care too much about post stats, as you can tell by my 60 posts lol. If you still want to throw a "like" out there you can though :)

Every good coach tries to steal elite recruits. Half these kids today commit and end up flipping to another school by signing day. No need for Freeze to be butt hurt over it. I'm sure he's contacted recruits committed to other schools.

Flipping Richmond was just pay back for Michael Oher back in the Fulmer days. Karma

All schools fight for recruits up to signing day, Alabama, aub, florida, and the list goes on. Butch isn't doing what a lot of them wish they could get done!!! GO BIG ORANGE!!!!

Exactly. The fact that Butch got a 5* OL to flip is reaason enough to keep recruiting everyone until signing day.

Help me out please. Other than Drew who did we steal? It seems we get recruits committed early in the process and then hang on till the end. Can you or anyone else list others we have flipped this year? tks

You're right about that. It does seem like Butch prefers to get 90% of the class locked up early and then go all out for the big boys late.

Technically, he didn't flip Phillips, Kirkland or Jones but they were all 3 looking like they were going to go elsewhere and Butch put on the full court press late and pulled the rug out from under the others. Ole Miss thought they had Kirkland locked up when he decommitted from UM. And most on here would admit that we didn't feel good about our chances with KP for the majority of his recruitment.

He did flip Sawyers and Robertson very late last year though.

My original point was that there's nothing wrong with getting a reputation for flipping recruits. It's his job and it's what he gets paid to do. Saban and Meyer are probably the two most notorious for flipping committed recruits and I think we would all be happier than a pig in **** if Butch/UT has the kind of success they've achieved.

Butch jones definitely negative recruits. He did it to Steve spurrier badly to get Scott. Kevin Sumlin said it best about negative recruiting, "it's not negative recruiting if it's true."

100% true. I don't care if he negative recruits either. People are extremely naive if they think that other SEC coaches don't do the same to us and bring up our record the past few year and things like that.

That nice guy act in SEC recruiting is a great way to get run out of town on a rail quickly.

Reminds me of George Costanza: "It's not a lie if you believe it."

Also Hugh Freeze blocked me on twitter for sending him the Encino Man gif, so he's shot up the list of SEC coaches I can't stand. Right behind Saban, Spurrier, and Richt.

After what CHF did in the 4th quarter this past season, I hope CBJ ask everyone to commit to OM. Then they can pull the rug out from under OM next year too by flipping to UT on signing day. You reap what you sow.
