Mike Gundy facing backlash

Players haven’t just taken over the football programs. They’re taking over schools. See Texas & A&M for example. Someone better be strong or it’s going in a death spiral. They’ll be hiring & firing coaches & ADs very soon. “We won’t help recruit unless the school song is changed” (@Texas) can quickly turn to “we won’t play if coach X is here”.
They don’t want a violent mob to ransack their campus and the leaders don’t want to be accused of being a “racist”.

I mean, Gundy and Brees are able to voice their opinions. If a player leaves Oklahoma St because Gundy voiced an opinion they didn't like, then they should be able to do that as well. Nobody is trying to muzzle Gundy or Brees or say they shouldn't be allowed to say the things they've said. They are free to say what they want, and if others don't like what they said then they are free to leave.

I think that some of the heat Gundy and Brees (especially Brees) have gotten from dissenters to their comments has been a little over the top, and folks are really quick to run to their battle stations, but that's just my opinion. If Chuba wanted to leave OSU because Gundy wore an OAN shirt, or a Saints player wants off the team because Brees said he still doesn't like anthem kneeling as a form of protest, I can think that's an overreaction on their part, but ultimately that's up to them to decide, and they can totally do that without "violating" someone's 1A rights.

What you and others seem to be suggesting in this thread is that other people should not, or should not be able to, take action in response to an opinion they don't like.
For every action there is a reaction. I am sad that people like Brees has to walk back and kiss his critics rears. The critics have one way of thinking and that’s their way. Brees coward to his critics just like Gundy. What the crazies need to realize is neither had any intent to hurt their sensitive feelings.

The player should be kicked off the team or forced to wake up at 3 30 a.m. to run stadium steps and then do it again at noon for one whole month to retain his spot on the team. Guess what bub, in the real world there are people with different opinions than you and you won't be sheltered from them your whole life. You need to respect people with diverse opinions. Most successful people, you know the types who employ people, especially in Oklahoma will not agree with your world view. Better get used to living with them.
I just can't imagine the kind of monsters we're raising when they think it's right to call out their coach in public over a T-shirt to assuage their ego.

Right or wrong it's going to be easy to recruit against the Cowboys.

Opposing coach - "You don't want to go there, the head coach is a Republican"

Brees didn't have to do that - he chose to do that and "clarify" his comments after his initial comments weren't warmly received (did he expect them to be warmly received)? He or anybody else is welcome to take the "If my comments pissed you off, then so what" approach. What is the alternative...make comments and say "nobody is allowed to be mad at me for making them?"

Welcome to the New America where college players can now get a established good coach in trouble or fired because he’s wearing a news network t-shirt. We now see at least 3 major college programs having players running the programs and dictating demands. I guess free college and the chance to be seen on national tv and the opportunity to make the NFL isn’t enough for these guys.

Quality post.

Shut up and score touchdowns?

If you agreed with the politics of the players, I bet your sentiment would be different. Say some head coach somewhere was a left-wing guy, and very vocal about it. A conservative pro-Trump player tweets out that he doesn't like things his coach says, and then his coach backs down and apologizes. What's your reaction?

I bet it isn't "These players are running the programs and dictating demands - I guess free college isn't good enough for them."

I don't think there's much going on upstairs with Gundy...seriously. He's never come off as all that intelligent of a person to me, and it isn't because of his accent, his mullet, or anything about his appearance.

If he has any self-awareness at all, perhaps he wore the shirt thinking he wouldn't be photographed. After all he was just going out fishing with his kids. However, if I was him, as soon as the dude pulled the camera out to take a photo it would occur to me I had an OAN shirt on and would stand outside the pic, or change into another shirt if I had one. Evidently he didn't see how him wearing that would be controversial - doesn't really show a high level of knowledge about political issues or just common sense.

It's like Pruitt being photographed in an anti-NRA t-shirt not thinking a large portion of our fans would be upset about it.

You’re on fire today.

I’ll just say that yesterday in my initial post on this topic I probably overreacted. I’m not saying I don’t think athletes voices shouldn’t be heard because I do. Their opinions matter and I have no problem with Hubbard problem with Gundy wearing a provocative shirt if he felt uncomfortable with his position on it. I think my reaction was based on a lot that I see that I don’t really agree with. A lot of that has to do with vilifying people very publicly who really aren’t doing anything that has malicious intent.
I think part of the issue I took with the reaction to Brees’ comments, although they were missing the mark and untimely, was how quickly and publicly his teammates, players around the League, the city of New Orleans and people like Shannon Sharpe and other media members destroyed him. Talk about the epitome of what have you done for me lately? He donated $5 million in April to Louisiana for COVID relief and has done a helluva lot more for the unique and diverse city of New Orleans than maybe anybody in the history of that town and then gets shouted at on Instagram by teammates. That’s complete ********. His statement wasn’t racist, definitely poorly timed and poorly thought out, but not racist, and certainly not worthy of the backlash he received and how quickly everyone was racing to cancel him. When people see good people like Drew Brees shouted down they don’t feel like this is a conversation any longer. That’s how I got to where I did. When kids at Texas are making a list of demands and when Hubbard sees Gundy wearing a provocative tshirt he takes to social media as opposed to talking behind closed doors it comes across as opportunism or doing the trendy thing that they see their idols in pro sport or pop culture doing. Everyone says they want change whether it be for one thing or another, but I don’t find the cancel culture and public shaming of questionable decision making a positive way to get the desired result. It certainly makes people like me question the players motivations.

Brees certainly deserved better

I have to disagree. The only action Grundy needs to do is to ask the player where to send his release form. The coach, just like the player, has the right to opinion. If the player is offended by that fact then he should go to wherever he can be happy. That way both individuals can exercise their rights.

It’s a t-shirt. What’s next socks?
