OK - let's look at the national stats and include Gundy's job at OSU:
2012 - team offense, through 12/01/12:
UT - 19th
OSU - 5th
2012 - team defense, through 12/01/12:
UT - 109th
OSU - 82nd
2012 - team W-L records
UT: 5-7
OSU: 7-5
That means to me that our 5-7 season turns into 6-6 or MAYBE 7-5 with maybe enough offense to pull out the GA game and maybe enough defense to pull out the MO game.
I truly pray this is not the direction UT goes.....or they simply are not paying attention to the fact that life and death in the SEC is about three things: Running the ball, stopping the run, and getting to the QB (passing efficiency defense). Period. Those three things. Check the stats yourself. Alabama, UF, LSU - the most successful, because they get it. Top 10 in all those categories. Year after year. OSU does pretty well in the 1st category (22nd), but your 5 OSU losses are due to ineptness in the other 2.
Conversely, Charlie Strong IS defense, and coached not 1 but 2 NC team defenses. OSU is just another shootout-and-pray-we-get-the-ball-last style team. Might provide for an exciting game now and then, but has been proven, time and again, to not work in the SEC long-term. All that fun-n-gun at UF? Don't kid yourself, those NC teams played defense, or it wouldn't of happened.
OSU gave up 59, 41, 44, 51, and 41 to Ariz, Texas, KSU, OU, and Baylor, respectively. How do you think that defense level will play out against Bama, UF, UGA, and MO every year? Not to mention Oregon and OU on the schedule the next 2-3 years?
If 7-5, 8-4, and the occasionally miraculous 9-3 is what we're shooting for, then let's go for Gundy. We want another NC, then it's time to start building this team around one main mindset: DDDEEEFFFEEENNNSSSEEE.
OH, BYW, this is to say absolutely nothing about the most important intangible: recruiting. Gotta get the kids to want to come to play for you. Saban (UA), Spurrier/Meyer/Muschamp (UF), Miles (LSU) - the most successful, because they get it. Top 10 in this category. Year after year. Sound familiar?
Please see previous paragraph about Strong. Who do you think put those TWO NC defenses together? Louisville goes 10-2 this year with only 3/4 of the kids being his recruits. Please. Only reason not to have Strong be the next HC at UT is because we offered and he said no.
Just my humble opinion on things, so just sayin'. They go for Gundy, then I'll be all in for Gundy. But Strong is the wiser SEC choice. Go Big Orange.
