I've gotten much joy out of watching his teams and him - thanks coach.

Mississippi State head football Mike Leach passed away today at University Medical Center, his family has announced at 7:58am Tuesday. Cause of passing was given as complications from a heart condition.

Leach never coached here but this death is hitting me hard, I really liked the guy I always saw him as the underdog coach that did more with less at every place he coached. I always rooted for him.

He was both a pirate and a sailor so to speak, but a great guy who demanded the best out of his players. He had a quirky and unorthodox way of doing so, but was very genuine.

The overwhelming show of love from all SEC fans and around the country shows that despite some little controversy surrounding him, he was loved by many. This just means he was genuinely a good person that pushed kids to do better almost like an old school army general.

Following the Red Raiders’ stunning loss to Texas A&M, Leach certainly didn’t disappoint on the comedy front. The coach seemed to blame complacency and being showered with praise by their better halves — or fulls, as the weighty case may be — for the loss.
“We pound on Kansas State,” Leach said immediately after the game, “so A&M looks at the film all week. The (Aggies) strut around and laugh – you know, ho-ho-ho, ha-ha-ha, and they listen to their fat li’l’ ol’ girlfriend, and pretty soon, what happens in Manhattan happens.
“Well, the first thing we do is we go in our meeting and we talk about we’re going to respect everyone; we’re going to fear no one. We’re not going to compare scores and we’re not going to listen to our fat little girlfriends.”

Heupel played for Leach in 1999 at OU. I just read that it was Leach who brought Heupel to OU.

He was a good coach. When other decent and mediocre coaches were snubbing the Vols after having to fire Butch Jones and the Schiano mishap, he was still willing to take the job. He will be missed by many on here.

I know it pales in comparison to life & death, but this is also devastating to MS St football. They're already searching for an athletic director. Seems like continuity will be difficult. But then we replaced both in sane off season & it worked out.
