It has poisoned our youth too...
I think this is a bit unfair and incredibly generalized. Just like radio, TV, and the general internet, there is always some negative impact socially, but in the long run, these ultimately diminish or are so far outweighed by the positives that they become irrelevant.
It's easy to look through your own lens, but imagine that there are kids around the world that benefited greatly from smart phones and are not at all poisoned. In many countries, it is the only way for them to get access to unfiltered sources of information and can be a primary means of education.
The Arab Spring would not have been possible without smart phones, and the protests in Iran - mostly by "youth" - are only possible because of kids using their smart phones.
Even in the US, I see my kids and their friends, and yes, they waste time on TikTok and crap like that, but they also organize themselves to feed homeless on weekends and be able to reach out to communities affected by disasters. The immediate social interactions also allow them to peer "monitor" in a way that they can identify when somebody is having issues and can provide support. Without their phones, they may not realize that somebody has been uncharacteristically absent from clubs and events.
You can smash your thumb with a hammer, but its still a great tool.
