Mike Leach Speaks Out

This wouldn’t even be an argument if it weren’t for fans. It’s fans who supply the massive amount of money which fuel the sports industry

Lulz…if the 2020 season taught us anything, it’s that CFB can survive with minimal fan support as long as those TV dollars keep rolling in.

That is an embarrassingly selfish attitude. In no particular order: Mike Leach is a buffoon and the players owe you nothing. They have helped bring their schools millions of dollars over their career. If anything, the school should owe them a cut of the earnings while they are there. It is the player’s decision and nobody else counts. This is pro sports now. Deal with it.
CFB is big business now and the players are employees of the university. They need to fulfill their commitment until the season is completely over OR they could enter the NFL or CFL right out of high school. Leach is right to the extent that the players benefit from the college game.

If anything the 2020 season taught us the opposite. Massive fan support in adjacent years allowed for the season to exist. If they were living year to year they wouldn’t have played at all. Seriously where do you think the money in sports comes from if it’s not the fans?

Students athletes are not employees of the university, what a weird thing to say.

Entering the NFL out of high school is dangerous and foolish for a laundry list of reasons.

Agreeing with Leach doesn’t make you sound as smart as you think it does.

You're now claiming the student athlete is an employee of the university???

I like Leach eve though he’s a weirdo. But he’s flat wrong on this. Life changing money is at stack for some of these kids. Non playoff bowls are pointless for a program and it’s a bigger accomplishment for a program to put a kid in the NFL.
It’s a false construct. The outcome isn’t binary. That’s what Leach said.

That’s actually where it’s heading. The Supreme Court has signaled that. And in response when this has all come to pass is that they’ll sign contracts and probably be required to play in whatever bowl games that are left to play in

It may be headed that way. And once it is that way, then bowl games can be in contracts. But it isn't that way now.
What's the difference between a player who opts out and one who transfers or hits portal?

Nothing. Both quitting on their team

There is no longer any obligations in college sports. When players and coaches can leave on a whim, nobody should owe anything to anyone. If a player wants to sit a game for the good of their future, more power to them.

Agreed with the caveat that since we are going nuts, we also extend the same courtesy to fans.

I should be able to buy "season tickets" to only the games that I actually want to see. No more throwing down $$$ to see It vs the South Alabama's of the world.

I should also be guaranteed free parking within 100 meters of the stadium for all events for which I hold a valid ticket.

In addition, the UT AD should be responsible for any food and beverage needs which I have while inside the stadium with a valid ticket ie a guest of the AD. Rather rude to expect your guests to pay for their food and beer, no??

After all, as you say the players and coaches can leave on a whim, why can't I? After all, as a fan it is my money-our money collectively which pay for all of this.

Being a diehard fan I want to see the best team hit the field in every game they play, including all bowl games. That being said, I also have no problem with the school buying say a $10million insurance policy for maybe 35 players which would come out less than a head coach's monthly salary. The players are covered for their future and the fans get their money's worth.

If it goes to a contractual agreement with the employee-student, you think the university will prohibit xfers and portals with a non compete?
Yes. College sports is headed to professionalization

Do you not understand fans can and do leave on a whim constantly? Move away, Bandwagon another team, work/life demands for time, financial constraints on disposable income, or simply tired of supporting a mediocre program.
Fans are the least consistent element of college athletics.

If Mike Leach ever coached for anything meaningful at the end of the year then his players wouldn’t opt out

I think it’s weak and embarrassing, but I did see Willis McGahee break his knee in real time, on TV. In that moment I did think it had been a pointless game. He was playing for a national championship at that moment, but to me it was still pointless in that context. But only that one time, and that was 20 years ago. He recovered. It is certainly a risk on some level.
