Mike Leach

Leach has been, and always will be, an average coach. His "air raid" offense is nothing more than passing all the time with no really innovative play calling as he just basically uses a set number of around 6-10. Very predictable and in his scheme all you have to do is keep the wide receivers in front of you to beat them.

All this excuse making and whining for being a bad team really is annoying after a while, an so crybabyish. Yesterday a bad team, Missouri, had their top 3 WR's out and 7 starters in total. Their 1st time playing QB absolutely tore LSU apart... and Missouri is not a good team. Yes, LSU lost a lot but all teams lose players every years... That's why you recruit and develop. The great ones do...Alabama, OSU, Clemson... Clemson lost their entire defensive line 2 years ago, but never missed a beat. OSU lost their DB's and safety to the NFL, plus 11 starters all together and still are prognosticated to have one of their best teams ever. The elite reload. Consistency is greatness

Fair enough, but I don't think Leach would win titles at Alabama or Clemson.

I think the teams he'd field at an elite school wouldn't be altogether different than the ones he's fielded at Texas Tech and Washington St. Occasionally pull a big upset, and at an elite school many of those games wouldn't be upsets anymore but rather games he'd be expected to win. However I think he'd still have some inexplicable loss(es) that would keep him out of a championship conversation. Kind of like Georgia under Richt. The thing with Leach is that it is unclear how good of a recruiter he is because he's only coached at places where it's really difficult to recruit well, and I'm not sure he could put together a lockdown defense that would be needed to win titles.

One of the most interesting things to speculate about with Leach is why he hasn't taken a job at an elite school.
An elite school wouldn’t hire him. Ever

Did you read the whole article? He said they needed to coach better and that they had to stick together. So he's placing blame on himself and the coaching staff as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if he has a better record after 3 or 4 years at Mississippi State than Pruitt will here.
He is tracking towards a 2 win season right now.

He was 3-9 his first season at Washington State. Once he gets his recruits his teams will be hard to beat. Also, go take a look at his current recruiting class. They may not be ranked as high as other programs but he's already gotten commits from quite a few players from Florida and Texas. And he's doing just fine in the state of Mississippi.

I will admit I and some others took too much out of that victory over LSU. LSU isn't looking good right now.

Been funny reading some of these Leach platitudes from the past 2 weeks. Actually, I like the guy & his entertaining offense. MSU will be dangerous, but defenses will catch on...oh wait: Arkansas already did & broke a 3-year SEC losing streak.
Arkansas almost beat Auburn too. Maybe the Razorbacks have improved since last season?

I'll be very surprised if that is the case. I don't think Leach's style works in the SEC.

doubt it - he isnt fooling anyone in the SEC, they know his teams pass almost every down and Kentucky was ready for it with 6 int

Guess we'll see. And I'm not saying he'll even win the SEC West at Mississippi State. I would not be surprised if his teams are consistently 7-5, 8-4, or 9-3. Which is about the best you can expect at Mississippi State.

Leach is gonna put a throw down on fake army as he usually does. 😂

Any questions???

If both coaches maintain their current trajectory, UT will smoke MSST in 3 or 4 (or both) years. UT will have an elite defense and a ball-control offense. MSST will have Leach's patented "Air Raid" offense, being ran by 3-star players that Lane Kiffin didn't want.

Advantage UT. I give it 4-5 years before MSST figures out what a mistake it was to hire Leach. Going 8-4 won't win the West, and Lane Kiffin is about to set the State of Mississippi on fire. The in-state rivalry is going to be must-see entertainment for the next few years.

Washington, who usually has a competent defense, had Leach figured out though. Leach only went 1-7 against Washington and scored an average of only 16 PPG in those games.

If I'm trying to figure out how to stop Leach, I'd pull the film from all those games.

Leach is rather easy to figure out. He doesn't believe in running the ball. Don't play man against him and you have a good chance of winning.

He's had some solid RBs over the years. However, it's not like his QBs are throwing for over 4,000 to 5,000 yards per season.

I think what made Leach an interesting choice to some is to see what he could do at a big time program like Tennessee where he could get some 4 to 5 star recruits. Keep in mind his teams at Tech and Washington State consisted primarily of 2 and 3 star recruits with the occasional 4 star committed.

These classes he's recruiting at Mississippi State will be the best he'll ever get. So we'll see what he does once he gets his recruits settled in.

Tennessee would not have fared week against Washington this last decade either. Remember, we went 5-5 against Vandy last decade.

He has the SEC’s returning leading rusher on the roster.
