Mike Matthews coming out party

and he needs to be willing to fire staff and bring in others if/when needed
I agree, i think you need to tell the OL coach, even though hes your friend, that he needs to go kick rocks after the season. This is year 4 and we still dont have 1 OL that we recruited from HS on that starting line up. Why? your excuse is "They just are not ready" why are they not ready? Your job as a coach is to get them ready. Zone blocking doesnt take 4 years to teach. period.

With the injuries to our more experienced receivers, I see a MM coming out party Saturday night. While Squirrel, Bru and Thornton are not listed as out for the game, I suspect they will be limited, opening the door for the youngster.
We never even play him so hopefully this injury sparks us like it did back when Joe Milton got hurt and it forced Heupel to play Hooker.

Matthews might be a good WR at some point, but he wasn't ready or able to beat out any of our starters. None of those guys were showing out so far this season so I have a hard time seeing Matthews be any different. Just hope me makes the right reads, runs the right routes and if a ball hits him in the hands....catch it. He does that and I'll consider it a solid first start.
Squirrel didn't either until about this time. He started getting more reps

QB has been chased all year. Until he has time, big plays by the receivers and backs are gonna be few and far between.

I hope this is the case. Would love to see any VOLS WR succeed. Matthews is very talented for sure.

I believe he plays exclusively outside. So any reps Matthews gets will be in the place of Bru, Thornton, or Brazzell. He is 3 or 4 inches shorter than any of the 3 guys above...but he is probably as fast as any of them and quicker than any of the 3 laterally/short area quickness like Squirrel. Matthews is gonna be a star at UT in my opinion. Its very, very rare for a freshman to be able to contribute much in the SEC though. Even Hyatt was a non factor as a frosh, and he ended up the best WR in college.

I believe Nimrod has been getting 2nd team reps at Slot WR with frosh Staley in 3rd. Braylon Staley hasnt really contributed as a frosh this year either due to depth chart (and being a freshman) but his tape from HS is awesome just like Matthews. I think he is gonna be a baller for us in due time also, as long as he keeps his head down and works hard. Both of the freshmen are 6ft0 to 6ft1in tall...so we arent gonna be nearly as big at WR other than Brazzell after this season when Bru and Donte leave. We are gonna be quicker though outside with Matthews, and bigger in the slot since Staley is bigger than Squirrel but still quite slippery.

We are gonna see some new blood this week at WR for sure...hope it works out. Our starters are beat up bad from last week at Arkansas. We are probably gonna run some 12 personnel though, and with that second TE we will not have a slot WR on the field. Only 2 WRs running routes when we have that formation...but we will be running the ball most of the time anyway from that set IMO. Flarduhs run defense has been abysmal this year vs SEC schools, Miami, any decent team they have played.

gotta be ALOT better in pass pro for a WR to have a coming out party. I just dont see it.
Eh, last week, more than one ball hit our receivers in the hands and they did not make the catch. Give the young dudes a chance to show what they can do.

Don't need big downfield plays....Just a few quick passes and some crossing routes would loosen up their defense....They're just waiting for our one demionial up the middle offense...We should get a patent on that play....We run it 15-20 times a game..Madness.

Hopefully you’re right. But worry if QB will have a lot of time to search him out. If there is a pass rush it’s questionable. He seem to give up too soon

For some reason we don’t have crossing routes or quick slants in our playbook anymore. Must have ripped out those pages after the 2022 season.

Hope you're right. He has missed a lot of practice. Hopefully he is up to speed with assignments and reads.

why is it when we get a frosh blue chipper they are never ready to go.

but by golly Ryan Williams and Wingo at TX!

I’m not sure which blue chip freshman Heupel has had that should’ve been ready to play as a freshman. Jaylen Wright played a lot. He was the one stopped short (but not really) in the music city bowl. Squirrel played as a freshman and had 20-30 catches, despite being behind Hyatt, who won the Belitnikoff. Who else should’ve been ready to contribute as a true freshman under Heupel?

I was hoping to get revenge for last year's humiliation in the Swamp. Nothing worse than getting laughed out of the place by a bunch of drunks.

Jeremiah Smith Ohio State

Matthews looked ready vs Kent State. You could tell he was a different breed on that kick-off return and those two catches.

Here's the thing. Outside of Squirrel - our WRs are making plays when given the chance.
Thornton has been catching deep passes all year

It's PLAY CALLING and a SHOOK QB.

Where's Ethan Davis?????

Mike Matthews looks ready, but so are the other guys in front of him. Nico just can't get them the football, (blocking, scared, slow development in pass routes)

The cycle of offensive suck: WR can't catch the balls because the QB cannot throw >>> QB can't throw because OL / RB cannot block >>> OL / RB cannot block because WRs are too slow to get open >>> WRs are too slow to get open

He battled a hamstring majority of fall camp. He's now healthy again. He's going to be a good player
Agreed. Why cant our 'good player' be getting ready? Why isnt there a designed play where nico rolls out wity motion, or PA?

We have three upper classmen starters on OL, four if you count DD. we have some of the best facilities, staff has longevity, great recruiting budget, Spyre, and rhey won the Orange bowl in 2023. They even have a top 10 draft pick in Darnell Wright. Where then, is the OL that can push around Arkansa and Oklahoma? We got pushed around.

If you cant or wont recruit at a high enough level to win consistently in SEC then you better effing durn well coach em up. Line should get a consistent push, and rotate in two deep. If you cant coach em up, and I mean to not implode on road, at mid tier SEC programs, then you sure as **** better sign a top class every year. Dont miss on the tackle at Colorado, or Stanton Ramil at MSU. Or the kid who grew up at UT fan and is committed to FSU.

Ive been impressed with Glen Ellarbee twice. The 22 line exceeded. The '24 class was above average. Other than that, he is weakest link.
