AP is carrying water for someone. Just a couple days ago he was pretty sure dude was gone. Probably getting that from the staff. Then he gets news he is staying and has apparently talked to the mom. So he probably got to break the news as long as he ran cover for MM and deflected NIL talk.

I haven’t read the comments in this thread. But all I’ll say is this is huge for the staff and the program.

We need elite talent to win at the highest level.
MM was 5⭐️ talent just 365 days ago out of HS.
We need elite talent to stay at UT.
In 2025, we need to see elite talent play and perform.

This is big for the Vols and I am expecting scheme, play calling , and player performance to align in 2025.

Go Vols.

Only if pass plays are directed to the tight ends. Early this season they were going that direction. Quickly faded off. No idea why.

How many of you guys are just going to make up what you believe the story is, particularly one which puts Matthews in a bad light?

I've never seen a mature 18-22 year old young man. Although if you have got the proper procedure for these young men to handle certain things maybe you should send the procedure to each one of the players in College Football.

We don’t hear about the mature ones because they don’t cause drama. I have seen a few in my day. I met a young man recently who started doing sales straight out of high school who already purchased a house by 21 (mortgage, not outright). He is young, single, and works until 7p every day but hustles and knows these are the years to be aggressive.

I think the team has plenty of young men like that too who don’t bother with the social media drama. I hope the school is giving them good advice on how to invest the NIL money they are making.

It seems pretty clear he visited Tennessee during the Alabama game in 22. He saw Jalin Hyatt and the offense running up and down the field and decided that's where he wanted to be.

Then last year and this year happened AND he wasn't sure what was happening with Nico so he got his name submitted to give him time to "let it marinate".

So if the offense was going in the same direction as the past 2 years and Nico put his name in the portal he was gonna leave too. Evidently he got answers. It plainly said it was never about money.

I didn’t really make anything up. AP said he was likely gone. Then he gets to break the news and quotes the mother while doing it. Those are facts.

Odds are there was something with NIL. Either we gave him more than we had been, or he couldn’t get more elsewhere than we had been giving him. There could have been other factors that contributed, but it’s naive to believe NIL had nothing to do with all of this. Austin Price will absolutely lie and parrot the company line if it means he gets to break the story, like most reporters.

That’s strong.
He reported what he was told. He doesn’t report his opinion as fact if it differs from what he’s told. Nobody would talk to him if he did that.

It's also a fact that several posters made the correct prediction that Matthews would enter the portal. It's the smart move, like it or not, the portal has become a piece in the renegotiating toolbox.

Mathews saw the WR room dissipate and jumped at the chance to enhance himself financially. Bright.

I'm glad he is staying. This is a position of need. He has shown flashes of greatness and could have a break out year coming. If he entered the portal for more money then no problem that is the current state of the sport and can't blame him for getting all the money he can get.

I would imagine he was being told it was NIL related when he said that MM was likely gone. I don’t fault MM for seeking more money, and I don’t really fault AP for saying what he has to to keep his sources happy. But to believe that money had absolutely nothing to do with this requires a lot of naïveté.

Yes but him reporting that they said it wasn’t about money doesn’t mean he believes it. He’s simply reporting.

I would guess his personal opinion is often different than what he reports

These guys are posting stuff before it gets released on the other site and stuff that turns out to be true (recruits committing, injuries to key players, players going into the portal, etc).

So yeah, they are quite clearly connected. You on the other hand, have no clue and are making wild assumptions based on zero evidence.
