Mike Norvell hired by FSU

Not sure if he’s great maybe great at a Memphis type school and a dud at a FSU. It’s a gamble hire if you ask me
I agree he’s a gamble but if you think about it there’s only a handful of coaches that are sure things. Kirby Smart was a gamble. Urban Meyer was a gamble when hired by Florida but not when hired by Ohio State. Bob Stoops, Nick Saban by LSU, and on and on. Very few proven Power 5 coaches move to another Power 5 school on their own. Proven is the key word as someone like Taggart was not proven at a Power 5 school before going to FSU while someone like Mullen was. Any coordinators or non-Power 5 head coaches are definitely gambles and one is about as likely to work out as the other.

Won’t he miss going to Tunica? I heard he was a gambler.

There are a lot of casinos in Florida. Not sure how many of them are huge casinos (like Seminole Hard Rock), but pretty sure there are tons of smaller ones all over the place.

But it's likely that Norvell will spend a lot of time in Miami recruiting anyway.

Bias Note I am a FSU fan, but honestly if I was UF I would be a little nervous of this hire. Norvell is not Butch 2.0 and should be a good hire, their path to greatness is much easier than UF's.. I can easily seeing Mullen losing some sleep on the recruiting trail over this.

TN just needs Miami to step up to effectively close the door on UF.

I dunno, he looks an AWFUL lot like any random, cookie cutter mid major coach who got handed a good situation by an outgoing coach who built the program from scratch, and left for greener pastures...That's Butch Jones...That is EXACTLY what Butch Jones was.

I'm not trying to be a contrarian, but why exactly do you disagree?...It can't just be that you "feel like he's different", I'd really love to to know, beyond wishful thinking, why you think Norvell is anything special?

Let's be straight. I am NOT saying he is the second coming of Bowden by any means. I'm just saying it's a good, solid hire. His Offense puts up great numbers everywhere he's been. His assistants are getting plucked by other schools. He adapts his offense to what his players talents are and he develops that talent.

If he gets a good DC and assistants that have Florida ties (he has none) he will turn FSU around...quickly. JMO

edit............. Personally, I really wanted someone else, but he's not ready for Prime Time yet. Will Healy from Charlotte. I've watch this guy coach. It's amazing how impressive he is.

My man, he's done nothing to show that he can build a program. He stepped into what Fuente started. He's going to have a lot of work to do at FSU, like Butch did at Tennessee.

Fuente had a couple bad seasons, which is pretty much par for the course at Memphis, had their first 10 win season since the 1930s in the 2014 season, then followed up with a 9 win season. Norvell came in, had an 8 win season, a 10 win season, only won 8 last year, and then went 12-1 this year. Fuente may have left him in a good position when he arrived, but at this point any success or failure of the program is all because of him.

Norvell was the best available coach willing to take the job.

Miami is a bigger dumpster fire than FSU right now, and you’ve got FSU players on Twitter pissed off about how Norvell’s hiring was announced.

Agree Mullen’s recruiting needs to improve, and it has, but to think UF fans are anything other than whelmed over this hire, you’d be wrong.

Only reason why I want him doing well at FSU is to potentially take recruits away from Florida. Whatever he can do to hurt the Gators’ program would be much appreciated and all I’m interested in.
Now that's the spirit!

Memphis State has been a trash program for decades. Absolutely sucked. 1 win seasons, 2 wins seasons, 3 win seasons sprinkled all through their history. A little bit of success here and there in the program’s 60 seasons, but on balance, they blow.

Then along comes Fuente, did a nice job, a really good job building and winning, finished 26-23 there in 4 seasons, .531 win %.

People who know Memphis just figured ok, they’ll suck again and not win anything without Fuente. But that’s not at all what’s happened.

They hired Norvell and not only did he keep things going, he’s taken them to another level. He’s 37-15 there, .712 win %, and his best season has been his 4th season, the season farthest away from Fuente’s tenure when he has a full roster of HIS players, not Fuente’s.

Say what you want, and who knows what he’ll do at FSU. But they guy did a great job at lowly Memphis and he earned the opportunity that he’s getting in Tallahassee.
