Mike Norvell hired by FSU

I dunno, he looks an AWFUL lot like any random, cookie cutter mid major coach who got handed a good situation by an outgoing coach who built the program from scratch, and left for greener pastures...That's Butch Jones...That is EXACTLY what Butch Jones was.
I don't think so. He took over a good program-made it better, he left with a Conference Championship, un-like butch that destroyed everything he touched, in fact, boy butch didn't even know there was a conference championship game, or champion. He was far more concerned with making champions of life!

Norvell was the best available coach willing to take the job.

Miami is a bigger dumpster fire than FSU right now, and you’ve got FSU players on Twitter pissed off about how Norvell’s hiring was announced.

Agree Mullen’s recruiting needs to improve, and it has, but to think UF fans are anything other than whelmed over this hire, you’d be wrong.

All I know is I am a native Floridian with a family tree full of UM fans who became bandwagon UF fans (like most UF fans) and they all woke up this morning stole their neighbors wifi and googled why they shouldnt be nervous about Norvell.

Depending on how the lesser schools fill their vacancies this hire could make Mullen's job interesting (being the mediocre recruiter he is when he owns the state).

He took what Justin did and turned it up to 11 (12 actually).

Norvell should do fine at FSU and the fact that a UF fanboy takes the time to post about him on a UT website makes my toes curl a little and makes me a little flush.

Your attempt at humor is noted.

I’m a UF alum who lives in Orlando, and have a working knowledge of the Memphis football program, considering they’ve played UCF about a half dozen times over the past 7-8 years or so.

Norvell is a good coach, but you’ll be hard pressed to find any UF fans worried about him based on his body of work so far.

UM and FSU are both chasing UF in-state.

UF is chasing UGA in the division.

UGA is chasing that elusive natty chip (although some posters here seem content with pounding their chest over division titles after getting pounded in the SEC title game).

Time will tell.

Is he known as a recruiter? Do players like him?

That locker room is got to be trash right now. 3 HCs in 3 years? Lots of players from different eras. And supposedly Fisher left a dumpster fire in terms of leadership and grades. I could see that popping back up.

Depends on the coordinators I guess.

.

Most Vol fans said the same thing back in 2005 when Urban was hired from Utah to take over the Florida program. Even fans of other programs within in the division were not overly concerned with Florida's hire. To be fair here, he had coached at Bowling Green (mid major) and Utah (mountain west), both of which were considered to be weaker conferences at the time.

2005 for Meyer was a good season. The rest is history.

I wouldn't write off Norvell just yet. He may not fit the mold of a great CFB yet, but give him some time and I believe he'll be competing or overtaking UM and UF for state superiority.

Even Florida fans and people who cover them were skeptical. I want to say it was Pat Dooley who wrote an article at the time not necessarily saying Urban was going to be an outright bust, but being pretty skeptical that his spread offense would work in the SEC and it was far from a sure thing he'd be a good coach there. He was less than thrilled with the hire. The rest is history.

If Norvell is successful at FSU and against Mullen, this thread should get bumped often.

As for Tennessee fans being skeptical of Meyer, it made sense at the time considering UT was coming off consecutive wins against us in ‘03 and ‘04.

Norvell isn’t inheriting the same level of talent Meyer did in 2005...not remotely close. Zook stocked the cupboard quite nicely for us. That’s not the case in Tallahassee at the moment.

I’m not writing off Norvell, but he’s got his work cut out for him.

If anything could be a positive - you're bound to be underestimated with a name like that. Must be a smart kid too; he got an offer from Yale according to 247.
He has that in his favor for sure. The Ivy League schools don't offer athletic scholarships... I have a friend that played at Cornell.

So despite taking the FSU job, will Norvell coach in the Cotton Bowl, or will one of the assistants at Memphis take over? Even if FSU is a higher profile job with better opportunities, the Cotton Bowl is one of the few games outside of the National Championship game that has any real prestige or fame attached to it. The Cotton Bowl is a sure thing right now also. Given recent history, there's no guarantee FSU will get a shot at the playoffs or a big bowl game.

He’s already stated he will not coach in the Cotton Bowl. UM has hired one of the Assistants as HC.

Recent history? 2013 NC’s and 2014 playoffs

Georgia Tech had a higher ranked recruiting class than FSUo_O The FSU football program has a long way to go:rolleyes:
9 days for Norvell to keep the commitments they had....and got a top QB. Overall good class considering and has spots open. He wants and will get several in the portal.

They have loads of talent, but the worst culture they’ve had since the early ‘70’s. Norvell will get them back to where they were.
