Military badges, coins, insignia, etc....

I can't remember if I posted this years ago or not.

Amomg my grandfathers ww2 military stuff I found this and got to keep it after he passed.
It has stumped many military historians and pin collectors.
I even let the guys at a local coin shop look at it and they didn't find anything resembling it, besides its real gold.

Any help would be appreciated.
(He served in the 69th infantry 1944-1945 France to Russia , as a Combat Engineer, Leipzig liberation and Elbe day, "East meets West" meeting between allies and Russian forces at the end of WW2)

Never seen anything like that before.

I sent the picture along with your comments to my son to see if he can find out anything about it.

Consistent lurker in this thread. Glad to see it back. Military memorabilia and history has always been a huge interest of mine. Thank you for posting, and for serving as well.

I feel cheated was there for 6 months and never saw it

When our group went in and Bare Based AL Udeid, Qatar in 01, AAFES was using those instead of change. That where I got mine.

I miss those "Wild, Wild West Days".

I ended up having a s*** ton of those POGs after my 5 tours. I bought a bottle of Crown Cask No. 16

I didn't see an AAFES when I was there ('91), guess that might be why I never saw these

When we went in to build that base up in Oct 01, AAFES brought in a shopette soon, thereafter.

I'm guessing here, if I remember correctly, I probably don't, transporting coinage would have been to heavy and expensive, thus the pogs.

That is correct.
