Milton’s One Hurdle

I think we can pinpoint Milton’s main limitation (thus far) to one thing. If he conquers it the ceiling is immeasurable. If he doesn’t, SEC road games are scary.

He plays tight when the game is tight. And plays loose (really well) when games are in hand.

Same with Clemson. There was an alternation of what felt like 5 or 6 possessions where it was a one possession game.

Once we shook free he played freely the rest of the way. Saw the same thing today. It’s a factor if he’s in a road environment with the crowd on his back. He needs to hit a few important balls early in Gainesville.
Yes, his mental, physical toughness and touch have been his biggest issues. They seem to go hand in hand. I think it has more to do with pocket pressure than it does the actual score of the game. Unfortunately, the latter is a reflection of how he handles the former. He reeled it in both games you mentioned though, so we shall see. Regardless, we should have been up 28 to 31 by half if it wasn’t for a couple of key drops. The glaring difference between last year and this year was that our receivers didn’t drop the ball.

It's not too late to coach him to be on the balls of his feet when he throws. That is fundamental and he absolutely should be doing it.

I think we can design better running plays for him. With his size we should never be handing the ball to a running back 5 yards behind the LOS on 4th and 1/2. Florida ran Tebow almost EVERY time they needed 1-3 yards for 2 years--and he almost always got the first down. I remember a looong time ago, Kentucky had a very big, agile QB. They played us at Neyland, and they just ran the guy on quarterback sweeps all day, with lead blockers, and we could not stop it and lost the game.

I thought Heupel was a little too pass happy in the first half, especially given that Uva couldn't stop our running attack. They were dropping two safeties deep and made it difficult to complete the many mid-range passes we were attempting. Too many--shades of Jim Chaney.

When we just started pounding the ball, late in the first half and into the 3rd quarter, we pulled away.
Absolutely correct on 4th down call, have never understood turning a 4th and 1 (or less) into a 4th and five. Line up quick, snap immediately, and drive. Almost impossible to stop. No need to hand off at all

Hard to say much on Milton in this game except he seemed patient and didn’t force a ton. That’s a step in the right direction.

Outside of overthrows - which we haven’t seen much of lately - it’s always been speed of decision for me. Milton has always taken a split second longer to pull the trigger than Hooker and that could be the difference. We won’t really know if that’s the case until we play some SEC teams with speed and big bodies. So I will remain cautiously optimistic that today was a sign of things to come and there will always been some rustiness in game 1 so we should expect improvement.

I noticed this also. Could be something to watch. But here’s my main concern, and I am a fan of Joe’s, but the guy is charmin soft to be as big as he is. I keep waiting for the Cam Newton style Joe to show up but he’s afraid of contact. Short yd situations he has to be the guy.

Some of y’all just decide on a narrative and ride it regardless of fact. That run near the goal line completely disproved this notion, but don’t let facts get in the way.

Does not completely disprove. The run last year, where he had to have 2-3 more yards, and he tucked his shoulder and dodged out of bounds. Have never been sold on his toughness. Still not

Apparently you missed him bulldozing a guy inside the five. Plus he’s no good hurt and on the bench. It’s a long season and hits start adding up.

Yeah. I think they’ll try to lean on the run game early on against Florida if they can and take some of the pressure off Joe. Florida didn’t look great along the line of scrimmage against a good Utah team.

I think Joe is getting a little better at using his physical advantages.

If Keyton catches the two balls that hit him in the hands we aren’t having any doubts…

And some of y’all clearly don’t read the responses before posting. Everyone loved the stiff arm run! Need more of it! My goodness.

What do subsequent posts have to do with the post I was responding to? Obviously, I wasn’t responding to them. I was responding to the post to which I replied and quoted.

I said may have been year before tough guy. Fact remains that was a weak effort when needing a td. He ducked out of bounds instead of giving his all

Kind of funny. If you search “ joe Milton runs out of bounds” you get that vid. Not shoved out, pushed out, knocked out, slung out, ran out, or forced out. RUNS OUT.
