Milton Unhaters

I just hope he doesn’t pull a Tebow, ie, if qb doesn’t work out but there’s a chance for him to stay in the league at a different position, I hope he takes it. Too many gifts to let them go to waste.

I liked Joe for a couple of reasons:
First is that he could have pulled the cord and jumped ship once he saw Hendon move up in the pecking order.
Second is that he has, and still does, always said that Tennessee is home - even after originally choosing Michigan.
I think what clouds most fans thoughts about Joe is that he followed what turned out to be a perfect storm of a high functioning QB in a high octane offense where there were multiple weapons to dump the ball...say what you want, but Joe did not have the receiving and running talent Hendon had at his disposal.

No one hates Joe, he just didn't play well enough sometimes.

I hope he finds success in the NFL
Joe got the weirdest hate though. At least with Dobbs and JG they were playing. Most of the hate directed at Joe seemed to come during Hookers last season when Joe was on the bench and in the little spot duty he got that year, showed out. 2022 Joe's stats were awesome 65% completion rate 10 td's no ints 4 sacks on 82 attempts and 4.3 ypc on rushing attempts. 204 rating. that year every 8th pass he attempted was a TD. In his whole time at UT he threw 32tds to 5 ints. all 5 ints happened in 2023 when he had serious problems at WR and Oline as far as injuries go. Was 2023 great? Heck no but it was a good season compared to what wed had the past 15 years. Take hookers time and dobbs best seasons off the board and Joes 2023 season is one of the best we have had from a QB compared to the dark days. Joe is 12th all time in TD's and yards for career. He is 35th in ints. hell he is top 25 for rushing TD's INCLUDING RB's

Since Fulmer was fired 4 QBs have put up more tds or yards than Milton 1 threw less int's (Hooker) Other than Hoooker all of them had over 800 attempts to his 497 Hooker had 632. The only Quarterbacks in UT history that attempted more than 8 passes with a higher rating than Milton ...are Hendon Hooker and Johnny Majors (59 attempts). His actual rating is higher than Peytons. Now on no plate in the known universe does that put him in conversation with Peyton or Hooker or Dobbs or Shuler etc. What it should do it make people think hard about how good or bad he actually was. Because his numbers make anyone saying he was a scrub look stupid.

Joe Milton was easily one of the most likeable QB's in UT history. He never whined, always smiled, never quit even when he was quit on, never got in trouble, never brought drama. Joe just got hate from the same people who seemed to spew hate on any highly melanated QB we had.

Joes biggest flaw was he wasn't as good as Hooker. We saw Hooker run the offense to absolute perfection and make every throw. Milton simply wasn't capable of doing that, and it was fairly obvious. It's not "hate". It just is what it is.

Well, he knows Joe personally, as a teammate, friend, and fellow QB. How do you know Joe?
I’m a Joe fan… hendon also said Joe would be the best Qb in the nation and heisman trophy type player… I’m just pointing out the statements would hold a tad bit more weight if it was someone other than hendon… there’s been at least 25-30 articles about their friendship and how close they are we all know how hendon and joe feel about each other.

My dog wears a Sentry Dual Action Flea & Tick Collar, which I change every 4 months instead of the recommended 6-8 months. No, you cannot have his collar, but here's a can of DDT. Oh, yeah, my dog is also clairvoyant. ;)
If that dog has pups, please let me know!!!!! Lolol

I had my concerns about Big Joe after the Ole Miss debacle.

The man redeemed himself in my eyes though.

Was a good teammate and put in the work to be the best version he could be.

Wish him the best, but honestly think he might have a better shot with a position switch as maybe a TE who can function as emergency QB or Hail Mary thrower if needed. Teams love those hybrid type players who can wear multiple hats.

Cool. My point is some folks are capable of recognizing the good things about Joe. Some refuse to do so. Thus, the post title Unhate.

My favorite part of the article:
The Tennessee quarterback was known for having a rocket arm; hence his nickname, "Bazooka Joe,"...

That's my favorite because the first place I heard or saw that nickname was VN!

@RavinDave . Your nickname stuck!

Yeah, thanks McDad.

At least I got that going for me.

Joe Milton didn’t achieve to his talent level. A lot of that was due to his WRs letting him down. There were quite a few times when those receivers could have made a crucial catch to spark momentum or turn the tide of a game - not just for Joe but for the team - and they didn’t. And yeah, Joe overthrew some of them and wasn’t consistent. It was a difficult situation after such a high powered offensive performance the previous year.

Joe Milton helped sustain us through a transition year. In the history of the program, he may well be remembered as the guy that helped us navigate a really hard season so that we could get to the other side and find sustained success again as a football team. Sticking it out with us and being such a great teammate should count for a lot with Joe!

I agree. I watched some games where he spotted Hooker, and played with the same WRs. Except in a few instances, they didn't drop Joe's balls, and put more effort into either running under the passes, or cutting properly to in place for well-placed balls. And did better with jump balls. I think if he had the same WRs Hooker had, Joe's have probably Heismanned. As for throwing too hard, our WRs aspire to the NFL. Pro QBs don't throw footballs softball style. The balls are delivered via Parrott rifle artillery.

Agree Ramel took at least 200 additional yards and multiple tds away on beautiful balls…there were multiple others as well… I always describe Joe as if coach calls the correct play he is great but he doesn’t have the feel to overcome when the defense calls the better play… it’s what allowed hooker to be efficient our staff is going to dial up the Right play often but when they don’t or the defensive line makes a play Joe doesn’t improvise well off platform… he can be a very solid pro but the best all can make plays when the original play breaks down… it’s why I believe Nico will bring the offense back up… if Joe woulda took off about 20 more times throughout the season he could’ve extended drives… 6”5 240 4.6 speed only matter if you use but I really want Joe to succeed and I’m so happy Nico got to learn from him… how to be a pro Qb in preparation, attitude, mentality, leadership what Joe did for Nico is invaluable and will allow him to hit the ground running from day 1.

Exactly. Milton was drafted much later. He won't be a bust because he won't be thrown immediately into QB1. Not sure why you brought Russell up. Milton is known as a guy who works hard and a good teammate. Russell never had that rep, even being the top choice
Only thing russell worked hard at was the menu at the Cheesecake Factory....

I was a huge Joe Milton fan and a huge Jerod May fan until they became New England Patriots.

Joe had the disadvantage of playing Bama and Florida on the road as well as injuries to Cooper Mays, Bru and Pili. That could be a 1 or 2 game swing in the season record. Oh yes Hiatt could have made a difference too. It will be interesting to see Joe in the NFL and I am pulling for him to make the Patriots look smart with that pick.

I’m just waiting for the OP to now fire up the 1000th version of the JG hate thread.
Oh, you'd love that, wouldn't you? A shame, we have people who PREFER to mock fans for being supportive of our players, instead of periodically dragging them up to badmouth them. I honestly believe such so-called Vols fans are either hybrid Alligatoridae, or Elephantidae. Can't think of any other motivation for being such consistent Vols player stomping.
