Minnesotans starting to figure Tubby out

Tubby is a solid coach, but certainly not a top-tier guy.
Tubby will retire with a lot of wins and a solid winning %, but is not a 'great' coach. Yes, he did win a national championship at Kentucky, but did it with Pitino's players. Inheriting good players doesn't guarantee championships, there is still some coaching involved, but Tubby cannot bring in national championship caliber classes.

Minnesota would be stupid to get rid of him, but there is a reason he landed at Minnesota rather than a traditional powerhouse program...

That's what I was doing. Jerry Green won the SEC regular season, won the East 2 out of 4 years, and went to 4 consecutive NCAA tourneys, and had a winning percentage almost identical to Pearl's at Tennessee. Try doing some research.

8 UT ncaa tourney wins prior to BP. 8 UT ncaa tourney wins since BP. That's from memory. You research it, and bring me a coffee.

I wonder what UK fans will blame Calipari for once he's gone.

He's in the process of doing more damage than Tubby ever did.

I'm thrilled he's in Lex, and I clearly remember UMass and Memphis not wanting to let him go.

The funny thing is, if Pearl gets fired....Cal would have been your first target if he was still at Memphis. Deny it all you want, but its true.

What's true is you've made one, huge incorrect assumption about who I'm a fan of.

Granted, I was a huge UT fan last night, but I wouldn't trade Billy Donovan for Calipari.

Who knows, maybe Cal might finally make it to a Final Four and not have to vacate the runner-up trophy.

A few years ago I'd rather have Donovan than Cal, but now that its becoming more evident that Donovan just got lucky with that championship class, its been NIT's ever since. This is Donovans first decent team in a while.

Yet Donovan was UK's first choice after Tubby and that drunk Gillispie....interesting.

We're all waiting for Cal to "get lucky" and win one national title, let alone back-to-back.

And as far as the OP is concerned, I guess nothing short of multiple Big Ten titles and a Final Four appearance at that basketball powerhouse Minnesota is proof positive that Tubby is garbage.

Tubby is a very good coach, which I understand isn't good enough for UK, but he's at freaking Minnesota.

Donovan was definitely UK's first choice after Tubby left, but Donovan didnt want to compete with his bestest pal Rick for recruits and crown of the state.

UK never approached Donovan on the 2nd time around, not even the feelers were out. They went straight after Cal, just like every sportswriter said they should...

Seeing as how most UK fans didn't have an issue with Gillispie's past, I'm not surprised you're thrilled to have Cal.

He's the hottest coach in the country, next to Coach K. Who wouldnt want him to lead your team?

Cal can't hold Coach K's jock, and he's downright toxic to programs after he leaves. Don't want him...UK can have him.

Great recruiter though....

What does that say about his coaching?

All that talent and no national titles...only vacated Final Four appearances.

He's a great coach. To take an NIT team, add a few 5 star freshman and win the SEC, the SEC tourny, sweep you're beloved gators, get a #1 seed in the ncaa tourny, become a national title contender all while keeping everyone happy with no transfers, no arrests (cough) and nobody unhappy with sharing minutes.......I've never seen a coach do it. If you dont think coaching plays a HUGE part, go watch Memphis. Loaded with talent, but cant win.

As for your comments on being toxic; UMass and Memphis would have sold the city to have kept him.

And it appears you're ready to do the same, regardless of the ramifications and in spite of his past.

Yeah. Just a few 5 star freshmen. It's not like any were drafted early in the first round or anything like that. And one guy that hardly played didn't go pro either. There was hardly any talent on that team. It was all coaching and development

Extremely misleading statistic there. For a lot of college basketball history, only one team per conference could be in the NCAA Tournament. Under modern rules, Ray Mears would have been in several more NCAAs and undoubtedly would have won some games there. Instead, he kept finishing second to the best teams money could buy up in Lexington and staying home.

Conversely, under the rules Mears coached under, Pearl would probably have just two tournament wins to his credit, the two he got the year we won the SEC outright and 31 games overall. And maybe not that, because he would have been coaching in a 32-team tournament and wouldn't have gotten a 15-seed to open with.
