Yeah. Just a few 5 star freshmen. It's not like any were drafted early in the first round or anything like that. And one guy that hardly played didn't go pro either. There was hardly any talent on that team. It was all coaching and development

Bringing together a few 5 star players with a team coming off an NIT game and making them title contenders is pretty impressive. But its more than talent. If you think coaching doesnt matter, look at Memphis. They have more talent than most teams in the country, but they couldnt beat ETSU. Developing players, teaching them plays and learning defenses is a little more difficult than you think. If it was all about recruiting, Memphis and UK would be #1 and #2 right now.

1. It wasn't just any ole 5 star freshmen. They were the best in the class. People said John wall was better than any recent high school pg and could go straight to the pros. If you look at the rivals ratings over the past 5 years. Almost every 5 or high 4 star player has had successful college and/or pro careers.

2. I'm not saying calipari is a bad coach. Obviously he is better than pastner even though pastners class had some casulties and busts. But to compare his coaching to Donovan, Coach K, Roy Williams, or Self is ridiculous. The truth is he's the best recruiter and an average coach.
3. I do think coaching matters. That's why Kentucky last year (the most talented and balanced team) only made the elite eight.

Almost every 4 or 5 star player has successful pro or college careers? Yeah, go check Louisville's top players....they all suck. Samuels was the number 1 player in the country 4 years ago and he was just as bad his first year as he was in his last few games. I strongly disagree about 4 and 5 star players....it takes coaching to develop them. Harrison Barnes at UNC is another 5 star bust, I dont think he could even start for UK or UT and he was considered the best forward in the country. I could list dozens..the list goes on. All I'm saying it that it takes a talent to develop and turn them into powerhouses in mere months....much less get along with everyone without any arguments or transfers due to lack of playing time.

If you want a UT example. Look at Hopson. He's a 5 star McDonalds All American and he's just as good as he was his freshman year. He's pure talent...maybe the best skilled guard in the conference and has the ability to take over a game. But next year he'll be a senior and still not a top NBA prospect, thats amazing.

2006:
PG: 3/4 five stars successful
SG: 3/5
SF: 7/10
PF/C: 7/10

2007:
PG: 5/5
SG: 3/4
SF: 7/8
PF/C: 9/11

I was too lazy to look at the rest but you can see a trend. And i judged successful based off their stats in college or pro and if they broke any records or had statistical high for their conference. Even some pro players didn't make the list because they didn't have a big enough impact. Usually in basketball, many of these kids are ready to come and be successful right away. Calipari success can be credited to his players. he wouldn't look so go with average players every once in a while.
