I think somebody is going to have to be on fahr on the offensive end or we’ll drop this one. It’s almost certainly going to be a defensive struggle. If we have an effective scorer than TN can pull it out.

It’s really hard to predict which way this one will go. Missouri will be by far the highest ranked opponent so far. If it is a close battle it should draw a lot of national interest. Unfortunately it’s on the SEC NW instead of ESPN.

Wednesday 12/30 at 9pm despite the VQ post indicating that it is on Monday night.

I looked on Mizz tigerboard and their fans aren’t impressed with our team and they said our team is like Bradley just more athletic. Seems they think their one point win over Bradley is more impressive than our Upstate win.

I agree about the win over Bradley being better than Upstate, but if we’re more athletic version of the team that lost to them by 1, I think we’re in good shape.

I predict it’s a FT shooting contest

I wouldn't say someone needs to be aflame. It seems like our strength is a balanced attack.

I hope Cuonzo loses every game he ever coaches. I liked the guy at first, great backstory surviving cancer, seemed to have a vested personal interest in the young men he was coaching. Teams played tough most of the time as well. But then when he up and bolted for Cal, instead of manning up and admitting he just didn't like it here and he was underperforming, he instead implied his life was in danger and essentialy he wasn't liked due to race.

Funny he essentially did the same at Cal. Wonder when he will spurn Mizzou?

Hope TN embarrasses them on their home court

I don’t think that thinking racism plays a factor in your coaching career rather than just admitting to yourself that you’re a decent/mediocre coach deserves a level of dislike like that. Heck, we all know he received some racism because there are openly racist people everywhere. It would be easy to leave if you’re getting harassed like that, even if it’s just a small amount, especially if your future is not good in that place due to being mediocre.

I still think he’s a good guy despite being a meh coach. Additionally, it’s kind of unfair to want him to be silent about that stuff when it happened.

Now, do I want him to lose to him, 1000% no, but I hate Missouri a lot less than LSU/UF/UK/AU for basketball for various reasons.

I’m worried about this one. Away game. Cuonzo’s revenge. Our young team’s first SEC game and their first game not at the friendly TBA. Plus TN is likely top 10 or better and even with limited capacity the crowd will be on fire. Return match will be on 1/23/2021.

A convincing win by TN would send my expectations off the charts. And put me on the lookout for the obligatory kick to the **** that pops up anytime we have great success. BVS.

I'm looking forward to them playing a better squad AND I think Barnes is a much better coach with better players so I like our changes in this one.
BVS rears its ugly head time to time...we will lose a couple this year but I believe we will enjoy this season!

Solid post. And I'm sure there was a level of racism spewed towards him. It happens everywhere unfortunately. But the guy was a PR loser, he never once tried to endear himself to the fans ....the same fans who pay the money to watch the product he is payed millions to coach.

So yes, the fans got irritated. There was that petition to BBB. But let's not pretend he was chased out of town (not saying you implied that, but some Cuonzo backers say he was). The guy left the cupboard bare, tucked his tail between his legs and bolted, and then spoke disparingly about TN. That speaks mightily of his actual character and ethics.

Yeah...he tried to make amends by telling Barnes he will love TN. But he knew Barnes was a class of coach he could never personally become

PR loser? The dude cares about his players and coaching basketball. He has no interest in PR. You can disparage him for that but it really isn't that big of a deal. Lots of coaches hate that "part of the job" and really only care about coaching. The deal with him leaving a job for another job is a reason to hate a guy? So stupid how people treat coaching jobs different than other jobs. He didn't like part of the environment surrounding his job and wasn't completely happy so he took another job. He didn't hang on until fired and cash buyout checks for 3 years. That happens all the time in every industry. We got a new boss at my job and some of my co-workers are now looking for another job. Difference? Look he is not an elite coach. I was not sad when he left. But carrying these types of opinions about him years later is ridiculous.

I think you’re missing the point that power 5 coaching positions are paid $millions because they are working in an entertainment industry and the huge money is only because the fans are interested / watching. Coaching basketball is only a part of the job at that level. If you don’t want to participate in the PR portion then coach high school or community college ball. If you want the big bucks then be a big boy and try your best at all aspects of your job. It’s disingenuous to think you can be an average coach of the sport and have enough leverage to ignore the fans. Bill Belicheck gets away with it but he’s got several championships under his belt.

I didn't miss any points. Everyone has aspects of their job they don't like do they put less effort into them. Plus they aren't necessarily good at those aspects of the job. He should choose not to coach college and be paid millions because of it? Lol, riiight. If a coach wins most fans could care less about PR. He doesn't win enough to coverup for it so he gets blowback from fans that want their coach to either win or entertain them in other ways. It's part of it. Personally, my attention watching sports has no connection to coach PR. I do not care in the least. I enjoyed watching UT under Pearl because we won. Lots of UT fans loved Pearl and they didn't even really care how much he won. They loved him because he was PT Barnum.

@walkenvol pretty much summed it up quite nicely. If you want to coach in the big leagues, you have to understand it's entertainment. The fans are who generate the income. Cuonzo wants the millions and the coaching but doesn't, or even refuses to attempt to endear himself to the fans. It's not like he was winning championships. He was underperforming.

Yeah, people loved Pruitt for being a good ole southern boy three years ago, but now every other post in the FF is making fun of his diction. In the end wins are all that matter

It will be a battle of imposing wills between Tennessee's offense versus Missouri's defense and it is a late tipoff at 9 p.m.

Cuonzo's personality and relationship with fans and the media were exacerbated by the fact that he followed the poster boy for those coaching traits. If Cuonzo had followed Jerry Green, his personality wouldn't have been as much of an issue, despite his results. He followed Pearl, though, and it made his absence of personality and fan relation/interaction stick out like a sore thumb. His on-court results only further magnified his shortcomings in the PR department.

I still think you’re missing my point. You don’t have to make yourself part of the entertainment by painting your chest orange or similar. You do have to put a competitive entertaining product on the court. If you consistently put out the best product like Belicheck then you can be a grinch to the media and your teams fans. If the product is average, then finding ways to endear yourself to the fans and your school will prolong your tenure. You can wish it were another way, but reality says otherwise.

Merry Christmas to all and hoping for a memorable season!

I think Oregon and Illinois were both a bit overrated. I think Mizzou is experienced and solid, but I think the Vols win this game going away. We've beaten them consistently with much less talent. But, basketball can be a fickle sport sometimes.
