we used fresh hamburger and steaks.

everything else was prepared daily in a microwave oven. Sans the pork bbq sandwich, which was boiled in a sack.

The salad bar, subsequently renamed Garden Bar - in a move of marketing genius - was restocked daily - Sysco-to-fork.

Spent a good bit of time at Ft Jackson. You're right. The only comparably ugly places I've been were central FL and Texas between Austin and San Antonio.
