Mosley should start at DT

Saulsberry didn't get a lot of time to show out before the injury but in the time he did have he was one, if not the most, impressive DT we had. I had rival fans asking me about him which says a lot given that even homers tend to ignore the guys in the trenches unless they're hyped through the roof.

Saulsberry tho impressed early. The only good thing about his injury is that it was very early in the season. Hopefully, he'll be back to 100 percent (or better) by the time the season starts.

Mosley = Haynesworth (in college and without the attitude), IMO.

I hope you're right but Haynesworth could run freakishly fast for someone his size. He truely was a freak athlete and was ranked a top 10 overall recruit coming out of HS. Henderson was the #7 overall recruit from the prior class. Both were unquestioned 5*'s and both were considered the top DL in the nation their season. Was Mosley even top 250? I know, I know, recruiting rankings are overrated and there's tons of 2*'s playing in the NFL. But, everybody was 100% sold on Henderson and Haynesworth coming out of HS. Not really being fair to Mosley measuring him against those 2.

and you can count on Jordan Williams being atleast 280lbs by Fall and the same with Mixon.

theres one thing for sure. The D Line wont be as freakin slow this year with Vereen,Curt, Jordan, Owen, and some of the other guys. theres actually a little burst with some of those guys. I think Mixon ends up being a good one at UT.

It will be Owen Williams and a combo of O'Brien/Saulsberry to start the season. The young guys will get plenty of opportunities in fall practice though. Sawyers, Mosely and Robertson and maybe even Barnett will get looks. But I would bet that the first three will get most of the 1st team reps.

I would rather Mosley RS. Strength wise I don't think he is ready. I do not want McCullers 2.0. It would be beneficial for him to RS. I also think Sawyers is ready to go.

I've seen game film on Mosley. Very mobile for his size. And, although it is HS footage, he looks strong as well. Much depends on how he did on S&C before he got here.

It might benefit him to sit out. But with such low depth at DT and O-Line, a RS for Mosley may be a luxury UT just can't afford right now.

Barnett has that mean streak that you want on the dl. I look for him to bust in rotation 2015 or so. Excited to see him stuffing some runs.

OP - Dont you think if playing DT was 90% just having an extremely large body in the A gap we would've been much better with Big Dan last year?
In some HS situation and youth football you can get away with that. You need to be taught good technique and higher football IQ.
Besides if we play against a team that is good at Zone blocking your premise completly goes out the window.
Hopefully Butch Jones isnt logged on and pays attention to your thread

What does Zone Blocking have to do with his post? If you cant move people then the ZBS wont work either

Ideally you would combo block Mosley in 40 front

Exactly, but a combo block doesn't mean 2 people block the same guy all play. And you dont really combo block a lot in a ZBS. Thats why its called zone blocking. You're blocking an area instead of a man. You help just enough to get someone sealed off, then u reach and climb to LBs.

McCullers was a load for offenses the past two years. Don't kid yourself and buy into all the hate on here. He didn't penetrate gaps like you like, but that was mostly because Dan was slow off the snap. He'll need to improve that a lot, at Pittsburgh.

Nevertheless, to get the most out of a big body DT, you need a good DT next to him. Teams could run right at an undersized, under-talented Daniel Hood all day long. Obrien is also relatively undersized.

On running plays the OL has to move the DT. On passing plays, they just have to protect their gap. This is why we would want to play our biggest DL's on running downs....to clog the inside rushing lanes and free up our LB's to pursue the ball carrier. Can't do that effectively with undersized DT's.

Glad Butch and coach Strip isn't consulting with you, either. :salute:

Lol Dan wont have to do anything except occupy blockers. DL penetration is the worst thing you could have in a 3-4.

I was talking about our 4-3 scheme. He was too slow off the ball for that. By the time he launched out of his stance, the OL had that split second to get into his chest and get a little leverage.

In a 3-4, even though he won't be asked to penetrate gaps much, he needs to get off the ball faster to keep the OL from getting underneath his pads.

I think Mosley is better in this regard, but we'll have to wait and see. Nevertheless, you cannot coach his size, and I cannot see Strip wanting to keep a behemoth like that on the bench anymore than he has to.

Fair enough but that can be taught fairly easy.
