Most dominant athlete in his sport

What about the guy people call "The Great One"?

#99. He played in the 80's and holds almost every single NHL record there is.

See the end of my post (#36). We agree.

The problem with this thread is that comparing team sport dominators to individual sport types is virtually impossible.

Nobody in any team sport in the modern era was as head and shoulders above the other best players as Gretzky.

Yeah he is. He's reached the finals the past 3 years. Thats dominate.
not when we're talking about the most dominant athlete. being second best doesn't count as dominant. Given your rooting interest, I should understand your comfort with coming in 2nd out of 2.

You're right, but whoever said Federer wasn't good on clay is wrong. He can beat anyone out there not named Nadal. On any other surface he is unbeatable. On clay there is one man in the world that can beat him. That's pretty dominant.

no debate from me that he's the best tennis player ever, but most dominant in my mind is someone with whom nobody else can be mentioned as comparable. certainly not someone who admittedly has a nemesis that beats them regularly. IMO the separation between fed and nadal is not as wide as Tiger and the #2, and is nowhere near Gretzky and the #2.

I started this thread thinking about the most dominant athlete right now. I think most would say Gretzky is the best hockey player ever. Maybe he was that much better than everyone else and just toyed with them. I'm not a hockey fan. I know a lot of people thought Lemieux was pretty close.

I believe Tiger is the best golfer right now and maybe the best ever. He had a ridiculous run a few years back, and at that point I would've said he's the most dominant athlete at the time. Back then, no way he doesn't win the US Open being in the situation he was this year. Maybe others have caught up. Maybe Tiger's just a hair less perfect than he was then.

Right now, with Federer, we're talking about a guy who, if taken to 5 sets, people are surprised, even when he wins. We don't expect anyone else to win tournaments he's in (save 1 on a particular surface, clay). We're certainly not surprised when Tiger doesn't win, but we are when Federer doesn't.

Therefore, IMO, Federer is more dominant.
