Give me your most over-rated and most under-rated President since the Civil War.

Mine:

over-rated: Reagan, and it isn't close.

Under-rated: Nixon.

overrated: kennedy (and it isn't close)
underrated: reagan (what president had this great of an effect on the future of the world and the US economy?)

Carter just sucked (and it isn't close) but as far as over and underrated I think Droski is spot on.

I might have gone with Kennedy if not for his legacy of NASA, and the fact that he got assassinated so early on it doesn't seem fair to compare him to others. It's like knocking prez Harrison.

Let the discussion of the myth of Reagan begin.

no myth.

his tax reform - closing the tax loopholes and lowering the tax rate for investments - DIRECTLY led to the economic boom of the next 20 years. and he did have a hand in the fall of communism. maybe given too much credit for that, but it woudl be silly to completely disregard it.

Make the case for Reagan. He's mythological in how conservatives remember him, IMO.

What if I told you taxes increased under Reagan? And so did deficit spending? And debt?

part of his tax policy was solid, but get's WAY too much credit for the cuban missile crisis and the space race.

tax receipts increased certainly. and as i said he eliminated a lot of tax loopholes which you are correct increased taxes for a decent amount of rich americans. it was a much more efficient tax system. much more inclined towards investment. hard to know how much of the deficit spending was do to needed build up of the cold war.

and FDR and Kennedy aren't lionized by the left in a similar fashion?

They totally are, but many know that. My choice of Reagan was because so many people have a vision of a man that just is bigger than life. Even more so recently.

he took over for an imbecile so it's hard not to look good. Then you compare him with the ones who followed and he looks even better. Very few Presidents who have done more

Over-rated? You could make a case for every 20th century President except Reagan... even those with bad reputations.

Under-rated? Cleveland maybe? He was the last Democrat who actually affirmed the USC and tried to stand against the wave of Progressivism.
