Having a debate with some people and thought I'd post a thread here to discuss. Who do you guys think are some of the most overrated college football coaches, both of all time and among current coaches?

#1 on my list, without any doubt whatsoever, is Bo Schembechler. If your only indication as to his greatness was how Michigan fans talk about him, you'd think he won 10 national championships and 20 Rose Bowls. If you haven't before, check his actual performance on both of those fronts (Nattys and Rose Bowls). It is very surprising and makes you wonder how he is a god-like figure among their fanbase.

For a current coach, I say Kirk Ferentz. I know expectations and the pressure to win are not extremely high at Iowa, but he's won only 55% of his conference games. He's been there 17 years and just signed a big contract extension.

Les has been a good coach, but he isn't worth the price being paid right now. Until proven otherwise, I would have to put Sumlin on the list, I think he is very likable but I don't get that type of football. Lou Holtz. Steve Spurrier during the Florida year, felt he did a real good job at SC though.

Maybe because Bo won 13 conference titles in 20 years, but hey what do I know.

You seriously think Spurrier at Florida was overrated? For real?

How was Spurrier overrated at Florida? He won a national title and 6 SEC Championships.

To give you an idea of how well Spurrier did at Florida, his conference winning percentage at Florida is higher than Saban's is at Alabama.

I'm not suggesting what you may think by posting that.

I'm just putting that out there to show that if you can compare yourself in some manner to what Saban is doing at Alabama now, you did pretty damn good.

Is Will Muschamp over-rated? Or does everyone else know he's weak? Seems to get a lot of hype. I agree with Lou Holtz.

6 SEC Championships in 12 seasons and a National Championship and Steve Spurrier was overrated at Florida?

I know I going to get some flack for this but right now Harbaugh. all the talk of him on ESPN and he hasn't won a big game at Michigan. at Stanford he had a great run but capped out at Conference champs. seems like a lot of people have him in the Top 5 but he hasn't proven it YET at Michigan.

For me it is Gus Malzann. The guy runs a glorified high school offense. Now that he doesn't have Cam creating offense along with defenses knowing to be disciplined and not fall for the silly types of misdirection, they just don't have much. They are terrible and he is still viewed as being some offensive Guru.

But other guys have won as many conference titles as him and paired them with National Titles and better records in big bowl games. Remember, the Rose Bowl in Schembechler's day was more important than being declared national champion by the polls at the end of the year, and he had a winning percentage of .200 in those games. He had serious troubles beating a variety of Pac 10 schools.

Schembechler never won a single national championship and went 2-8 in the Rose Bowl. Never had an undefeated season.

Overrated doesn't mean "bad." My point is that he is revered by Michiganders as a figure on par with Bear Bryant and he just wasn't as good as him or others like Bowden and Tom Osborne. Bryant won 14 conference titles, 6 National Titles, and went undefeated 3 times. Schembechler, as good as he was, is nowhere near that level.

The funny thing is that if you had today's climate in his day, he probably would have been on the hot seat and fired in the early 80s after a run of Rose Bowl futility and some mediocre conference finishes.

I have a feeling Butch will be added to this list in a couple weeks. I think CBJ is more of a motivational speaker. I question many of his hires. Letting Pittman go and seeing an offensive line struggle to progress. Mahoney and Debord could end up costing him his job here.

I don't think he let Pittman go...I think he was pretty determined to move to Georgia to be with Chaney, who he apparently is close friends with.

Kirk Ferentz at Iowa. Just signed another long term contract extension until 2026. Career record at Iowa: 129-87, Bowl Record 6-7.
