Most overrated college coaches

No way someone could say Spurrier is overrated and be right. Didn't USCjr win 11 games 3 straight years? That's ridiculous for them. He's one of the greatest ever.

I think the LSU guy said Spurrier was overrated at Florida, which is laughable.

Keep in mind he was competing against FSU during their heyday, and Miami was a factor nationally at the beginning and end of the 90s. It's not as though UF had a monopoly on in-state talent.

During Spurrier's 12-year run at Florida he either won or played for the SEC title 8 of those years (winning 6 while not being eligible for the 1990 title), and never finished lower than 2nd in the East. UF had a 25-game winning streak in conference play from 1994-1997.

I'd like to know what Spurrier didn't accomplish at Florida that made him overrated. He was winless in Tallahassee and Starkville, so maybe that's it.

And laughable because of the reasoning.

Spurrier was the gold standard in the 90's, no doubt.

The SEC has had great coaches pre SEC CG and those coaches got to claim SEC titles in the case of a tie. See 1989 where Bama, UT, & Auburn claimed the title. You can't do that anymore. So his 6 SEC's in 12 years (in the CG era) is very impressive.

Yup... overrated yes... he was good record wise... don't think that crap would have worked in today's game. The passing equivalent of Les Miles in some ways. I think he did good at SC with what he had to work with.

It's just an opinion... overrated... I didn't say he was an idiot or something.

No offense but that's just crazy talk. Spurrier overrated?? While at Florida??
You do realize he virtually dominated the SEC entirely while he was there, right? Was an offensive innovator. Florida was nothing more than an also-ran before his arrival.
Most importantly made our Vols his personal B*TCH!! Single handedly kept Manning and UT from multiple titles. Geeesh! What else do you want him to do?

My pick is Bobby Bowden: He and Florida State joined the patsy ACC and were in the national title hunt almost every year without breaking a sweat. Easy schedule. He played Miami most years, if not every year, and often lost. FSU hardly ever had more than 3 tough games.

Same for Michigan under Schembechler. The Big 10 was always hugely overrated. Two school conference (with OSU). Everyone else was somewhere between mediocre and bad with the exception of Michigan State occasionally. His lousy Rose Bowl record is telling. Good pick.

Obviously this topic is 100% subjective and thus not worth arguing in reality, BUT I disagree with both assertions.
The weak conference rationale is just silly in my opinion. Versus what exactly? If the competition is so poor and it's just "that easy" why haven't more coaches had similar success? Regardless of the competition, to achieve the kind of consistent success both of these guys did over numerous years is impressive and frankly rare. Would Bowden have had as much success in the SEC? Probably not. But that doesn't diminish his accomplishments. By that rationale onle SEC coaches should be considered good? Silly.

It has to be Kirk Ferentz at Iowa. They are paying him over 4 million a year and just gave him a 10 year extension, for winning absolutely nothing.

I've been known to howl at the moon.

Offensively, I felt a good portion of their offense was chucking it up to the WR on the edge, superior talent, wouldn't work today but it worked then for sure.

For the record, everyone I have on my list actually won a national championship, doesn't mean they are or weren't overrated. Also, I never said he was crap, I said I thought he was overrated.

I think he did a good job at SC, other than maybe the last two years.

What does not working today have to do with anything he did 15-25 years ago?

And yes, we know you didn't say he was crap, but you did say he was overrated, and that's what so many are scoffing at.

Personally, sounds like you simply didn't like him and are grasping at straws for a reason to label him overrated.

He chunked the ball up on the edge, he didn't even need a good QB to do it. I didn't see anything genius about it, obviously he was good enough.... still overrated in my book, what he did SC was more impressive to me. It's alright if you disagree.

There is no straws to grabs, it's an opinion. My opinion on him as a person has gone up and down and up again... still think he was overrated at FL as a coach and I think he did a very good job at SC overall.

Hoo boy...you've minimized Spurrier's offense at UF to throwing passes "on the edge" with unskilled QBs and SEC record breaking WRs like Chris Doering and Reidel Anthony who barely had a cup of coffee in the NFL.

Your opinion is garbage, but to be fair you're entitled to a garbage opinion.

Considering only coaches who are active today, it is possible to objectify the question pretty easily. How they're "rated" can be based on how much a school sees fit to pay them, and whether or not they're worth it ("overrated" or not) depends on what success they've delivered for that price tag.

Following that line of inquiry, it is reasonable to conclude that Jim Harbaugh, Charlie Strong, Kevin Sumlin, and James Franklin all rank high on the over-rated scale:
  • Highest paid coach never to win a national title: Jim Harbaugh ($7,004,000 / year) ... next highest: Charlie Strong ($5.1M). NOTE: plenty of coaches who make less have won national championships and continue to coach...I stopped counting after finding eight.
  • Highest paid coach never to win a conference title: Kevin Sumlin ($5M) ... next highest: James Franklin ($4.4M). Plenty making less than Sumlin who have won their conference, as well.
  • Highest paid coach never to win a division title: James Franklin ($4.4M). Ditto earlier comment about more cost-efficient coaches lower on the pay scale.
Everyone believes Harbaugh is bound to "pay off" soon ... and he might. Then again, he may not. Same with Sumlin at A&M, and Strong at Texas. Most rational folk are already concluding that Franklin is a bust, even many Penn State fans. Only time will tell on any of them.

For now, they are the four highest-paid coaches in college football today who have yet to see college championships at the levels highlighted, whether at their current school or any previous stop.

If you haven't noticed I'm not trying real hard to defend anything. We'll just have to agree to disagree. :hi:

Les has been a good coach, but he isn't worth the price being paid right now. Until proven otherwise, I would have to put Sumlin on the list, I think he is very likable but I don't get that type of football. Lou Holtz. Steve Spurrier during the Florida year, felt he did a real good job at SC though.

Spurrier?? You've gotta be kidding. I'll give you Holtz.

Richt has always been overrated, in my opinion. You could always count on him at UGA to lose 1 and usually 2 games he shouldn't. Miles has just faded, imo.

With the talent he had at UF? The quitter is overrated.

And who was responsible for getting the talent?

Plus, he was freaking 122-27-1 at Florida....I don't care if he had the '85 Bears playing for Florida, that record was incredible.

Btw, the 4 coaches right before him, over 11 seasons won 58% of their games compared to his 82%.....and of course, the guy right after him had a ton of talent but finished 23-14 in 3 seasons.

Put your homerism and blind hatred of him aside BOT and give him his due....the guy was great, which is the biggest reason he was (and evidently still is by some) so hated by Vols fans.

But other guys have won as many conference titles as him and paired them with National Titles and better records in big bowl games. Remember, the Rose Bowl in Schembechler's day was more important than being declared national champion by the polls at the end of the year, and he had a winning percentage of .200 in those games. He had serious troubles beating a variety of Pac 10 schools.

Schembechler never won a single national championship and went 2-8 in the Rose Bowl. Never had an undefeated season.

Overrated doesn't mean "bad." My point is that he is revered by Michiganders as a figure on par with Bear Bryant and he just wasn't as good as him or others like Bowden and Tom Osborne. Bryant won 14 conference titles, 6 National Titles, and went undefeated 3 times. Schembechler, as good as he was, is nowhere near that level.

The funny thing is that if you had today's climate in his day, he probably would have been on the hot seat and fired in the early 80s after a run of Rose Bowl futility and some mediocre conference finishes.

Judging coaches by bowl games is just a really dumb way to evaluate a career.

Going back a few years here.

Vince Dooley.

Didn't even average 8 wins a year
Only really good teams he had were with a freak athlete in Herschel Walker. Treated like a god. I don't get it.
