Most overrated players

OK. I will bite.

What's wrong with his career .338/.388/.459, 3141 hits, 543 doubles, 319 SBs, 15 AS, 1383 R, and an average of only 29 SO/yr.?

You have to also consider the position he played. He was an outfielder with little power and didn't walk, while playing average defense throughout his career. He only slugged .460, and his OBP isn't great (though average based, it was good)...His career ISO power? .120...that's not good.

HOF? Yeah. But I still think somewhat overrated.

He's prolly gonna say the he never won an MVP nor a WS.

Gywnn is a hall of famer. Though batting average is severely overrated, I cannot ignore .338. Plus is OBP was good enough to merit being in the HOF.

Part of Tony's problem was he played RF. Had he played SS/2nd, or even third, I think it would be a little different. But again, a .120 ISO% is bad.

I also caught Gywnn at the tail end of his career.

Really overrated? Dave Winfield.

In his prime, he was an average defender, good but not great stat line for his career, and the same for his prime. At no point was Dave Winfield better than say, Dale Murphy.

Murphy Prime: .284/.374/.517

Winfield Prime: .291/.360/.496

You stayed up too late watching the braves game last night and the fist pumps did you in.

It was silly. I should have been in bed...but nope, I had to watch the Braves.

Still loved it. I've been waiting all day for the game tonight.

If anything, Willie Mays is underrated per his power numbers considering he played the majority of his career in a park where hitting homer required absolutely crushing it -- not like Yankee stadium where you could hit one off the nub of the bat in a check swing.

* my bad guys. I was half asleep when I posted that last night.

I thought the op was saying most overrated PLAY not player. I was referring to his over the shoulder catch.

Mays was during the world series and, IIRC, he prevented guys from tagging with the throw. large moment.

Good ones named so far: Rose, Ryan, Winfield.

Add Dimaggio (he was an average defender in center). Jeter. Lou Brock. Jim Palmer

Underrated: Tris Speaker, Walter Johnson (why is the award called the Cy Young?), Stan Musial, Chipper Jones (lol at only 3 all star games), Mel Ott, Eddie Collins, Nap Lajoie, Robin Yount, Frank Robinson.

My top 5 players of all time in order:

Ruth, Williams, Mays, Aaron, Wagner.

Also, closers are somewhat overrated. The ninth inning should not count double.
