Mount Rushmore of Great Coordinators But Failed as Head Coach.

Josh McDaniels so far..

Ed Orgeron had the one year, but he is really more of a defensive line coach.

Wouldn't have thought that...interesting.

Even though it wasn't a good defense, it still had a ton of talent. Pruitt has only coached places where the talent is overflowing, and he almost always took over a D that was great the previous year.
And Shoop took over a top 20 defense and it turned to complete ****. I don’t blame Shoop, but success by your predecessor doesn’t predict success for you.

Jerry Sandusky never dipped his talents into the head coaching ranks after being a great DC at Penn State.

Dan Mullen will resurface as a top head coach after a year off and counting all his coins.

Brent Venables will be a flop at Oklahoma.

Phil Fulmer would have been another Saban if he coached at Georgia or Florida - states with stockpiles of instate talent rather than the Volunteer State.

Monte Kiffin was head coach at NC state and did not do great but was a terrific DC in the NFL although he sired at least one pathetic offspring.

Norv Turner. He got 3 head coaching gigs and didn't do well at any of them. He was the Redskins head coach for 7 seasons after winning 33 games in his first 5 years. How?

Wade Phillips. Fired from 3 head coaching jobs where he inherited great talent but wasted it (Denver, Buffalo, Dallas), held 3 interim HC jobs (replacing his dad in 1985 with the Saints, Falcons, Texans) but was never hired permanently. Good DC who finally won a ring with Denver in SB 50 and had a chance to get another in SB LIII with the Rams.

I believe wmcovol and Pacer92 had the best lists but combining their two with one other name makes it complete IMO.

Was anyone more hyped as an offensive genius at the college AND pro levels at one point in time than was Norm Chow?

He was a spectacular failure as a head coach but was on the lips of everyone in the world of football at one point in time.

Mark Helfrich might qualify for the original post.
NC game appearance. Won 11, 13 and 9 games before the final season of 4 wins that got him fired. Overall 37-16. I don’t think he qualifies. And Charlie Strong’s tenure at Louisville removes his candidacy imo.

Forgot he was the coach when they went to the Title Game. That was a forgettable National Title game.

He had the number 1 defense in the country in 2013 at FSU. That team was a lot more than just Winston. He wasn’t average at UGA. His first defense was ranked 45th mainly because they were switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4. His Second and last defense there was ranked 17th.

Exactly. He was a great coordinator and anyone who says otherwise is simply wrong. Bama’s defense took a huge drop after he left.

Man, some of y’all overrate the hell out of the importance of in state talent. Like kids don’t cross state lines to go to college. Saban isn’t in a state like Georgia or Florida, either. He just pulls a bunch of kids from both…just like Fulmer did.

Fulmer never would have been Saban in any circumstance because he simply isn’t as driven, as smart, or as adaptable. He had one of the greatest jobs in the country, he inherited a loaded roster from his predecessor, and he left it in worse shape than he found it. There is no reason to think he could be Saban anywhere. He never even had to build. Stop acting like the Tennessee job is chopped liver because “instate talent.”

The defensive talent at Bama has dropped off. Don’t listen to me. See the # of NFL 1st rounders. They’re about all on offense since JP left.

Again, Tennessee should have scored almost 50 on this great DC in 2015 when he was at Ga if not for dumb unforced turnovers.

So that talent dropped off immediately the following season, huh? Maybe they have fewer 1st rounders because they’re not being developed as well.

He had #1 defenses at both Alabama and Florida State, coordinating National Titles at both. He took Georgia from a defense ranked in the 30s to #4.

He was highly successful as a DC at 3 different schools. That’s not a fluke. That’s a better coordinator resume than just about everyone mentioned in this thread. I understand he sucked as as a Head Coach. But that’s not the same thing as being a coordinator…hence, the topic of this thread.
