Moving to Knoxville

Unrelated, but what is pellissippi Rush hour traffic like? My job is moving to other side of knoxville.

Merging onto I40 from the north(Oak Ridge) or south(Alcoa) are both somewhat annoying at 5pm. Depending on where your work will be there are alternatives.

Thanks. I currently take alcoa to I-40, so it can't be much worse.

Here's my experience commuting back downtown from Dutchtown Rd off of Pellissippi (north)...
at or before 5pm, you're generally okay.
at 5:07-ish pm, the commuters from Oak Ridge are arriving...it's slowing down considerably...but you'll make it.
at 5:15pm-??, often times, it's not pleasant. The way I see it, cars were designed for one purpose only, to get humans from point A to point B faster than walking, bicycles, or horseback...so I get really frustrated sitting in traffic not caused by accidents. I've spent upwards of 25 minutes on that ramp alone more times than I'd like to count.

Not sure what it's like coming up from the south part of Pellissippi though.

Moral of the story, if you can get out of work a few minutes early, try to get there as close to 5pm as you can.

What, no east side love here? Houston hills, nice place, great lots, views of the MTNs, older homes with lots of character. World class golfing right in front of me

Be sure to roll up your windows and lock your doors when driving towards downtown.

I appreciate it! I'm going south to maryville, so I get to skip 40 all together now.

Wow didn't realize the interstate was such a crimezone

West Knoxvillians seem to be very proud of West Knoxville. Don't worry too much over it. It's our fault for wanting to live in other areas like the dumps of North Knox, the slums of East Knox, or the 'meh' that is South Knox. Hard to actually see those areas over the gates that protect the shangri la that is West Knox, I guess.

Probably less than 1% of West Knoxville houses are in gated communities. More for condos.

I find it funny when those that only drive by WK are so quick to criticize it. They have very little idea what it's like to actually live there.

Property crime rates are going to be higher in WK. There's more wealth, therefore thieves are attracted to the area. As far as non-domestic violence... there is no comparison. WK is by far the safest area. Domestic violence is most likely very similar across the socio-economic spectrum. But you're probably not going to be mugged in WK or get a random cap in your ass.

I haven't been mugged or capped yet and I lived east for over ten years now. Your myopic view of east knoxville is antiquated to say the least

Most of Knoxville's slums are on the East Side. That's not debatable.

Gang activity is concentrated on the East Side.

Most that have the means to live in any area of Knoxville live out west.

No need to skew the facts for the OP.

My neighborhood has looked into gates, but the zoning laws require the HOA to maintain roads and utilities if gated. That really makes it financially difficult.

We are a young community with a ton of construction and have had multiple construction thefts, garage/car theft, and at least one break in. No violent crimes, though.

West Knoxville has gangs. I have means and I live east. Have you ever been to Holston hills? It's by no means the ghetto or slums. I have a condo off magnolia behind Cansler Fields and never once had an issue. I go to the grocery on the magnolia/Asheville split at Kroger. Eat Knox is a safe place to live. I have no clue why you are so biased against it. Crime is going g to happen everywhere. So OP my suggestion is visit all areas of town and go where you feel most comfortable. There are plenty of good options in all directions.

See, and sensible person who lives west but doesn't have a hate agenda for the rest of the county. And I know for a fact he's been to east knoxville and not been mugged

I even survived a few trips to East Town mall back in the day.

BD is right, Holston is really nice. To be honest, I've never had a problem anywhere in Knoxville. I lived in Memphis for four years and school was right downtown, so everything is relative.

It's all relative. I didn't say that every bit of East Knoxville is a slum. Yes, I have been to Holston Hills. We had a membership at Holston Hills Country Club. I had lunch at Knoxville Center Mall about once a week for 8 years. I worked east of the Old City for about 5 years. I helped build three Habitat for Humanity houses out east. I played softball for several years at Wynona Park and also off of Skyline Drive. I know what's there.

I wouldn't suggest wandering around MLK Blvd or the Cherry Street area late at night.

I'm not being biased, just stating facts. West Knoxville is BY FAR the best, safest part of Knoxville and East Knoxville is the worst, least safe part of Knoxville. It's funny when those that have never lived in West Knoxville take shots at it.

Oh and the West Knoxville gangs are in Western Heights, probably not in Concord or Fox Den.

The gated shangri la comment was a joke, I work in WK and have several family members that live in the area that I visit regularly. If I had the means to live there, I'd buy land on Norris Lake and build a cabin to spend my weekends at, and still live elsewhere. But that's just me.

BTW...the quick to criticize comment is kind of pot calling the kettle black, amiright?!?!

You just said that most of it was...along with most of North Knox being a dump...again with the quick to criticize pot meet kettle scenario.

If only everyone could afford $500k+ homes...then no one would get their garbage picked up.

Most of east Knoxville IS a slum and most of north Knoxville IS a dump. That doesn't mean there aren't some nice areas scattered about like 4th & Gill and Holston Hills. There are more slums and dumps than there are nice areas... therefore "most" is accurate. Sorry for speaking the truth.

^this...I've never been anywhere in Knoxville where I truly felt unsafe. Sure, there are areas I wouldn't want to live in, but I've never felt I should avoid visiting the area or friends who may live in them.
