Corners do have massive value, but we didn’t play a corner as our nickel back last season. A lot of teams play safeties there
Because we weren’t deep enough at corner. In today’s NFL having a guy that can cover the slot (usually the fastest WR on the field) is usually a better option than a good tackler

Plenty of teams play a safety at nickel. It’s not simply due to a lack of corners. It’s common to replace a LB with a safety in the slot. None of our slot guys are smaller guys. They’re all safety type bodies.

If you look at the photo of their 2019 defense against Memphis, the guy in the slot is Lamont Wade #38. 199Lbs and listed as a safety.
